GTA 6 Trailer 3: Rockstar’s Wildcard Play on Netflix, Just When You Thought It Couldn’t Get Weirder

Hold onto your hats, gamers! After what feels like an eternity of anticipation, we’re finally getting a third look at Grand Theft Auto 6. But in true Rockstar fashion, the reveal is taking place in the most unexpected way possible: on Netflix. Yes, you read that right. The developer announced Thursday that “trailer 3” will drop at 3 p.m. ET on August 27th, exclusively on the streaming giant. Why? Well, that’s part of what makes this whole situation so delightfully bizarre.

Rockstar’s Unconventional Approach

It shouldn’t come as a complete shock that Rockstar is eschewing traditional promotional models. Given that GTA 6 is arguably the most anticipated entertainment release ever, they could probably announce it via carrier pigeon and still break records. The open-world crime game, returning the series to its Miami-inspired setting of Vice City, has been fueled by years of steadily building hype, despite a distinct lack of gameplay footage until recently. The first trailer, released in December 2023, racked up nearly 300 million views on YouTube, while the May 2024 second trailer also achieved staggering numbers, nearing 200 million views.

As my colleague Giovanni Colantonio has noted, Rockstar Games consistently plays by its own rules. While most game developers follow a predictable roadmap – teaser, gameplay trailer, story trailer, followed by previews and interviews – Rockstar prefers to keep things close to the vest. Trailers are scarce, previews are tightly controlled, and gameplay is revealed only when they deem it necessary. This strategy has been consistent throughout GTA 6’s development cycle, but this Netflix reveal takes it to a whole new level.

The partnership between Rockstar Games and Netflix dates back years; in 2023, Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on the platform. Perhaps this move is driven by security concerns, recalling the leak of the first GTA 6 trailer that forced an earlier-than-planned release. Or maybe it’s a calculated attempt to showcase GTA 6’s visual fidelity on larger screens, given that Netflix data suggests 70% of users stream content on TVs compared to mobile devices. However, dropping a major trailer in the middle of a workday feels like an odd choice.

It’s hard to see what benefit Netflix gains from this beyond a potential (and likely fleeting) boost in subscriptions. After all, the third GTA 6 trailer will be freely available on YouTube and Rockstar’s official website just six hours later, at 9 p.m. ET. And let’s not forget the inevitable attempts by internet users to rip and share it immediately. By then, most people will have already moved on. Netflix is essentially one-upping Square Enix in the art of unnecessary platform exclusivity. Unless, of course, this reveal includes some kind of interactive element – a possibility that seems unlikely given Rockstar’s usual reticence.

Fans spent the summer speculating when GTA 6’s third trailer would drop, hoping for a release in May after an earnings call, then again in late June after Summer Game Fest, or in early July after pre-orders went live. August 27th is arguably the most chaotic time of the year for such a reveal.

Gamescom’s annual Opening Night Light stream airs on Tuesday, August 25th, followed by a week of previews and World Premieres. This is a critical moment for studios promoting games during Opening Night Live, offering one last chance to generate buzz before the busy fall gaming season begins. Now, it’s inevitable that GTA 6’s third trailer will dominate much of that attention.

But that’s been the story with every step of GTA 6’s marketing campaign. Rockstar doesn’t need to follow any traditional playbook to ensure GTA 6 smashes sales records. They could break every rule in the book and still achieve phenomenal success. The fans are eager to dive into the virtual mayhem of Fake Miami, and they will devour every piece of news about it – even if it means borrowing their cousin’s friend’s ex’s Netflix password.

GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19th for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Get ready!
