While “The Mandalorian & Grogu” didn’t quite reach galactic heights at the cinema, Disney continues to push forward with ambitious film projects. Production Weekly’s latest issue has reignited hope for two highly anticipated movies: “Star Wars: New Jedi Order” and Dave Filoni’s currently untitled cinematic event.
“New Jedi Order”: Rey’s Journey Continues
“Star Wars: New Jedi Order,” poised to bring back Daisy Ridley as a more mature Rey, roughly 15 years after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker,” is facing an uphill battle. The sequel trilogy remains a point of contention for many fans, and this film’s direct connection to that era presents a significant challenge. Reportedly, the project has seen multiple writers come and go. Damon Lindelof (“Lost,” “The Leftovers,” “Watchmen”) and Justin Britt-Gibson initially penned the script before moving on to HBO’s superhero detective series, Lanterns. Steven Knight, the mastermind behind “Peaky Blinders,” was also attached but departed in 2024. Variety recently reported that George Nolfi (“The Bourne Ultimatum”) is now at the helm of the scriptwriting process. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is set to direct this pivotal film.
Originally slated for a December 17, 2027, release, “New Jedi Order” was conspicuously removed from Disney’s schedule in May 2025. This absence fueled speculation about its fate, but the latest news suggests it’s very much still in development.
Dave Filoni’s Epic Conclusion
Details surrounding Dave Filoni’s untitled film have been shrouded in mystery, but Production Weekly offers a tantalizing glimpse: “The story will focus on the New Republic and will conclude the interconnected narratives told in ‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘The Book of Boba Fett,’ ‘Ahsoka,’ and other Disney Plus series.” This suggests a grand finale to the sprawling saga Filoni has been meticulously crafting for years. While rumors previously linked this film directly to recent Disney Plus TV shows, it remains to be seen if that core premise will hold true after The Mandalorian and Grogu underperformed at the box office.
In January, Filoni ascended to the role of president and chief creative officer at Lucasfilm, solidifying his position as a driving force behind the franchise’s future. His impressive portfolio includes numerous Star Wars TV series, such as “The Clone Wars,” “Rebels,” “Ahsoka,” and “Maul – Shadow Lord.” While many of these shows have been critically acclaimed, Filoni has also faced criticism for creating an increasingly complex and insular television universe that demands extensive prior knowledge.
Currently, the only Star Wars film with a confirmed release date is Star Wars: Starfighter, set five years after “The Rise of Skywalker” and starring Ryan Gosling as a pilot. Shawn Levy (“Deadpool & Wolverine”) is directing this project, which is scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2027. While the theatrical releases have been somewhat infrequent in recent years, the Star Wars universe has remained vibrant through exceptional television series like “The Mandalorian” and the recently announced Star Wars: Zero Company tactics game.
