Protecting Employees in a Digital Age

This isn’t just about appeasing angry gamers; it’s also about complying with new Japanese labor laws. “Similar to other companies in Japan, Sony Interactive Entertainment has published its policy in compliance with a new law taking effect on October 1, which requires employers in Japan to implement measures to address customer harassment,” Sony explained to GameSpot.

[According to the policy], Sony will now actively restrict individuals who “exceed what is considered reasonable” when interacting with customer service. This includes unreasonable demands for compensation or apologies, as well as abusive language and threats. In extreme cases, Sony reserves the right to involve law enforcement and legal counsel to protect its employees.

While this new policy aims to shield customer service staff from harassment, it’s unlikely to quell the broader discontent surrounding Sony’s shift towards an all-digital future. The company has also faced criticism for other recent actions, including [responding to a class action lawsuit] regarding the sale of game licenses instead of full games in its digital store.

Furthermore, several publishers have accused Sony of anti-competitive practices and attempting to establish a monopoly through its digital storefront.
