Sony recently unveiled a new feature for PS5 users: free live TV. This means any PS5 owner with a PlayStation account now has access to a range of ad-supported live TV channels directly through their console, at no extra cost. But is this really the only way to enjoy free movies and TV shows on your PlayStation? Let’s dive in.
Accessing Sony’s “Live TV” Feature
To access this new live TV experience, you’ll need a PlayStation 5 and an active PlayStation account. Currently, it’s only available in the U.S., with plans to expand into Canada soon. Here’s how to find it:
- Navigate to your media tab on the PS5 interface.
- Select “Live TV on PS5.”
- Sign in to your PlayStation account.
While Sony positions this as a free service, accessing it requires linking your PlayStation account to a Sony Core Pictures account. This is the same account you use to buy or rent movies and series through your PlayStation, similar to how Prime Video works. You can also subscribe to this service separately as a standalone streaming subscription.
The user interface mimics traditional cable TV, providing schedules for each channel. Like most modern streaming platforms, you’ll also receive personalized recommendations.
The Catch: Limited Content
Don’t expect the expansive library of channels you’d find with paid subscriptions like Hulu + Live TV or ESPN Unlimited. Instead, Sony offers a selection more akin to reruns from classic channels. You can catch free movies on channels like MovieSphere and Sony One Horror Hits, and enjoy full episodes of shows such as Community, The Walking Dead, and Naruto. There’s also limited sports programming, along with local news and weather through NBC and Fox.

This new Sony feature isn’t your only option for free live TV. There are two other particularly great free streaming apps available on PS5 that you can download directly.
Pluto TV
Under the Paramount umbrella, Pluto TV boasts over 400 channels with a wide range of free movies and shows. This vast library includes everything from the John Wick franchise to Top Gun: Maverick, Pitch Perfect, and an impressive collection of Star Trek series. You’ll also find local CBS news stations.
Tubi
Acquired by Fox in 2020, Tubi has been steadily expanding its offerings. It’s picked up classic cartoons previously dropped by streamers like HBO Max and boasts a great selection of anime. You might discover hidden gems on Tubi, including the Kung Fu Panda movies, Men in Black, and the Jurassic World movies. Like Pluto TV, Tubi also offers live TV, featuring sports reruns and local news under the Fox banner.
Bonus: YouTube and Twitch
Okay, it’s not exactly free TV shows or movies, but if you’re looking for solid, free entertainment, YouTube and Twitch are goldmines. Both are available as apps on your PS5, and while they include ads, they offer an almost limitless amount of content.
