Get ready to sink your teeth into something new! After a long period of silence, Tripwire Interactive and Demiurge Studios have finally unleashed the first look at Maneater 2 during today’s State of Play. The sequel promises to be the ultimate “ShaRkPG” experience, building upon the foundation of the original with even more teeth, terror, and… well, shark-related shenanigans. While we’re not getting the full story just yet, I’m diving deep (pun intended!) into what we saw in the trailer and what players can expect when Maneater 2 launches later in 2027.
Welcome to Neptune’s Kingdom
Maneater 2 plunges you directly into the heart of Neptune’s Kingdom, an ultra-luxury private island theme park destined for disaster. You are that disaster. Described by CEO Victor Reardon as “your exclusive gateway to the grandeur of Ancient Rome,” this gargantuan venture aims to blend the excess of Las Vegas with the whimsy of Anaheim. Neptune’s Kingdom pushes technological, natural, cultural—and ethical—boundaries. But history teaches us that boundaries often push back… Our story begins as your new man-eating bull shark finds herself swimming unattended within the confines of Neptune’s Kingdom, ready to eat, explore, and evolve her way to freedom.
Natural Selections
Neptune’s Kingdom boasts a highly advanced Marine Research division, which some see as a groundbreaking scientific achievement while others view it as a lawbreaking abomination. Regardless of opinion, Victor Reardon’s ambition to build attractions never before seen has made Neptune’s Kingdom unlike any other place on Earth. Breakthroughs in bioengineering, though hastily implemented, have turned the park into an exceptional feat of artificial biodiversity. Throughout Neptune’s Kingdom, the tropical climate has been altered to create conditions for aquatic biomes from across the globe, such as arctic and volcanic regions. This allows Neptune’s Kingdom to foster all kinds of flora and fauna that aren’t typically indigenous to the region.
But the scientific absurdities don’t stop there. Relaxed regulations for genetic experimentation have also led to entertaining mutations in the local marine population. One early park attendee even reported seeing a crab “the size of their G-Wagon.” Signs point toward fascinating evolutions occurring under the surface as a byproduct of Neptune’s Kingdom’s attraction engineering. Over the course of Maneater 2, this will undoubtedly lead to many threats, but also opportunities for the shark to exploit these evolutionary quirks and gain powerful advantages. After all, amidst a crowd of parkgoers fueled by green juice and peptides, it’s only fair that the shark gets to try some body hacking of her own.
A Fin-tastic Voyage
Original Maneater fans will be thrilled by the return of Trip Westhaven (colorfully voiced by Chris Parnell) as the bull shark’s go-to source for color commentary and one-sided conversations. As Trip follows your whereabouts, you’ll both come to see Neptune’s Kingdom for what it truly is: a playground full of POIs with an endless buffet of thought leaders, media luminaries, and over-armed security to gorge upon. Below the surface lies a bustling food chain disrupted by submersible human threats and highly-evolved apex predators who will stop at nothing to keep you from claiming your spot at the top. For the average human, Neptune’s Kingdom is the theme park of their dreams. For the bull shark, it’s a fully realized aquatic sandbox with secrets to uncover, courses and currents to traverse, and dangers to overcome.
As the first Maneater game built using Unreal Engine 5, Maneater 2’s environments will be even more immersive. Rays of sunlight realistically diffuse through water, underwater ecosystems benefit from enhanced NPC behaviors, the meticulous art direction of the game world fully realizes the vision for Neptune’s Kingdom, and all of it is waiting to be splattered with the blood of your prey.
