To be honest, naming this week was a challenge. We considered “Joy Week,” “Positivity Week,” and even “Good Vibes Week,” but none felt quite right. While optimism has its complexities, it ultimately seemed like the best fit for what we wanted to achieve.

Our goal is simple: to create a space that offers a bit of upliftment. Writing about video games lately – or really, for the past few years – has been… complicated. What’s often presented as an escapist pastime, designed to spark joy, has become increasingly fraught with challenges. When asked how things are in the gaming industry, I often find myself doing a mental calculation: how much honesty can I offer without overwhelming them?

The truth is, things aren’t great. Developers, particularly those in the “west,” are facing unprecedented layoffs, resulting in a massive loss of talent accumulated over decades. This situation is driven and exacerbated by executive mismanagement, with these same executives often receiving exorbitant compensation while companies struggle. Others face the ethical dilemma of partnering with regimes that have questionable human rights records. Games are becoming more expensive again, coinciding with a global cost-of-living crisis. Hardware pricing is disastrous, thanks to war, tariffs, and persistent shortages driven by AI development. Owning your games is becoming increasingly difficult as we move away from physical media.

The list goes on. Gacha mechanics and other forms of pseudo-gambling are rampant, even in games targeted at children. Popular kids’ games have reputations for being breeding grounds for predators and exploitation. Aggressive engagement tactics are now the norm, leading to a constant battle for attention amidst algorithmic social media feeds. Investor money is flowing away from games and into AI, forcing players to be vigilant against unscrupulous developers peddling low-quality, plagiarized content. The “creator economy” of Twitch and YouTube has collapsed, pushing many to engage in arbitrary culture wars as a desperate attempt to maintain viewership, distracting them from the real issues at hand. And, of course, gaming journalism itself is facing its own set of challenges, often due to short-sighted decisions driven by venture capitalists or shareholder demands.

So, yes, things are tough. It’s crucial that we cover these issues with honesty and refuse to look away. Gaming journalism isn’t just entertainment; it’s a responsibility. However, it’s equally important that we don’t dwell in misery. We also want to provide readers with engaging content, be a place people enjoy visiting, and celebrate the moments of joy, brilliance, and inspiration when they arise. Focusing solely on the negative can be overwhelming, and sometimes, a little escapism is exactly what’s needed. It’s a fundamental part of the human experience.

In essence, as we approach the end of a particularly bleak summer in the gaming world, we all could use a dose of joy, positivity, and good vibes. We need reminders of why we fell in love with video games in the first place. This week is our attempt to provide that, alongside our regular coverage: a series of features about optimism, inspiration, and the enduring power of video games.
