The galaxy far, far away just got a little bit smaller, as gameplay footage has emerged online for Star Wars: Magellan, the action RPG that was tragically canceled. Developed by Echtra Games, now sadly defunct, this lost title offers a glimpse into what could have been.
A Glimpse of What Could Have Been
Uploaded by a former developer, as reported by MP1st, the footage showcases various characters, including a Jedi and a Mandalorian, battling their way through waves of enemies. The game appears to be heavily focused on loot, with enemies dropping gear and equipment of varying rarities. This suggests a gameplay loop centered around character progression and customization.
Each character seems to possess a unique set of skills and weapon choices, hinting at diverse playstyles. Furthermore, MP1st also reported that Star Wars: Magellan was intended to feature an “NPC Bond” system, allowing players to forge deeper relationships with key characters within the game’s narrative.
Star Wars: Magellan was originally slated for release on PC and modern consoles, including PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Echtra Games, the studio behind this ambitious project, was acquired by Zynga in 2021, leading to the commencement of development on what was then an unnamed action RPG. However, information about the game remained scarce in the years that followed.
Unfortunately, in June 2025, Zynga made the difficult decision to shut down Echtra Games. A statement released at the time explained that this move was part of a “strategic realignment” within the company. While undoubtedly disappointing for fans eager to experience Star Wars: Magellan, it’s a reminder of the volatile nature of game development and the challenges faced by studios.
It’s bittersweet to see what the talented team at Echtra had been working on. The studio previously delivered Torchlight 3, which, while not without its flaws at launch, possessed a certain charm and undeniable heart. Hopefully, this leaked footage will serve as a testament to their passion and creativity, even if the game itself never saw the light of day.
