Insomniac Games’ upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine is poised to be a major highlight of September, but even before its release, it’s facing an onslaught of negativity online. While some criticism is inevitable, the sheer volume and often baseless nature of the complaints are concerning.
The Algorithm Amplifies Negativity
It’s no secret that platforms like X (formerly Twitter) incentivize drama to boost engagement. Insomniac’s community and marketing director, James Stevenson, has publicly criticized this toxic environment and its impact on developers. He expressed concern about the algorithm’s tendency to amplify negativity, making it difficult for constructive feedback to be heard.
“I think the wild way this algorithm amplifies and forces negativity upon you has me reconsidering my philosophy on telling devs to look or post here,” Stevenson wrote. “It’s a relentless onslaught that I cannot believe is good for anyone’s mental health nor representative.”
Stevenson also pointed out that X was flooding his feed with negative content, which he attributed to the site’s algorithm. A recent study by the University of Toronto found that X’s recommendation algorithms heavily favor high-engagement content, inflammatory political posts, and polarizing posts – a trend many users have become adept at exploiting for engagement and potential revenue through programs like the Original Content Rewards Program.
A History of Online Backlash
This isn’t the first time Insomniac has faced this kind of online toxicity. Before the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Reddit users famously complained that one screenshot contained fewer puddles than shown at E3 2018. Insomniac responded with humor, adding an abundance of customizable puddle stickers in the game’s photo mode – a playful jab at “Puddlegate.”
It’s also not surprising to see Marvel’s Wolverine caught up in this online negativity, as anything related to PlayStation often becomes a target for users venting frustrations about Sony’s decisions, such as the decision to end disc production in 2028.
Focus on the Game
Ultimately, it’s important to remember that online hate, whether manufactured or genuine, doesn’t reflect reality. The best approach is often to ignore the haters and focus on the game itself. Early previews of Marvel’s Wolverine suggest it will be a solid entry in Insomniac’s superhero lineup. As managing editor Tamoor Hussain wrote in GameSpot’s Wolverine preview, “It’s undeniable that Insomniac’s take on Logan is firmly planted in familiar game design, but Wolverine is clearly doing more than just fitting a typical story of the character in it.”
Sony has also announced a limited-edition Marvel’s Wolverine PS5 bundle, console covers, and a new DualSense controller inspired by the game, all available for preorder soon. Marvel’s Wolverine launches on September 15 for PS5.
