The rumors surrounding a new StarCraft title have been swirling for months, fueled by whispers of Korean developer-publisher Nexon acquiring the rights and strange occurrences on the official StarCraft 2 website. Now, thanks to industry insider Jason Schreier, we’re getting a clearer picture – or at least, ruling out one possibility.
Not Another Live Service?
In a recent conversation with former Polygon guides producer Ryan Gilliam, Schreier dropped a significant piece of information: “I wouldn’t count on this StarCraft game being a Destiny-like, I’ll say that.” This revelation might disappoint some fans hoping for another well-funded live service title to rival Bungie’s masterpiece. It also raises questions about Blizzard’s approach to the revival, especially considering their track record with successful live service games.
So, What Is It?
If it’s not a Destiny clone, what can we expect from this new StarCraft installment? According to Windows Central editor Jez Corden, the project seems to be drawing inspiration from games like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and even elements of the Far Cry series. “From what I saw it’s more Space Marine 2 / Far Cry kinda adjacent, but dunno for sure what the overall gameplay formula will be,” Corden wrote on X.
The mention of Far Cry is particularly intriguing, given that former Far Cry boss Dan Hay is reportedly leading a StarCraft shooter project at Blizzard. While Space Marine 2 and Far Cry share relatively few common features, it’s unclear exactly which elements Corden might be referring to.
BlizzCon: The Unveiling
All eyes will be on BlizzCon, taking place September 12th-13th. Given the recent teases and mounting anticipation, the opening ceremony is widely expected to be the moment when Blizzard officially unveils the new StarCraft game. Prepare for a weekend of announcements, gameplay reveals, and hopefully, a glimpse into the future of this iconic sci-fi franchise.
