In a surprising turn of events, Nicolas Cage’s critically acclaimed but short-lived series, Spider-Noir, has been canceled by Amazon Prime Video after just one season. Despite strong initial viewership, the high production costs ultimately led to the decision, leaving fans disappointed and sparking debate about the future of superhero content on streaming platforms.
A Noir Take on a Classic Hero
For those unfamiliar, Spider-Noir reimagines Spider-Man as Ben Reilly, a hard-boiled private investigator navigating the gritty underworld of 1930s New York City during Prohibition. The series, which debuted on MGM+ before its global release on Prime Video, offered a unique visual style, presented in both black and white and color options, adding to its distinctive atmosphere. The show garnered praise for Cage’s performance, blending his signature intensity with the iconic Spider-Man persona.

IGN’s review of Spider-Noir praised the show, awarding it an 8/10. “Nicolas Cage’s Bogie-meets-Bugs Bunny pulp hero invigorates the highly entertaining, genre-bending Spider-Noir,” we wrote, highlighting the series’ unique blend of genres and Cage’s captivating performance.
A Brief But Impactful Run
While Spider-Noir enjoyed a strong initial launch, viewership numbers reportedly declined shortly after, ultimately leading to its removal from Prime Video’s top 10 charts. This, combined with the significant production costs associated with bringing the series to life, proved too much for Amazon to sustain.

In a statement released to Deadline, Nicolas Cage offered a philosophical perspective on the cancellation. “For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man,” he stated. “Onwards, upwards, inwards.”
Part of a Larger Deal
Spider-Noir was part of a broader agreement between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, leveraging IP from Sony’s vast library of Marvel characters. Notably, another project under this deal, the Silk spin-off, was also canceled shortly after Spider-Noir received the green light. However, according to Deadline, the cancellation of Spider-Noir doesn’t signal the end of all collaborations, with multiple projects still in development.
For fans eager for more Spider-Man adventures, the next installment is Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, slated to hit theaters on June 18, 2027.
