A Blast From The Past: Killzone Returns?
For those unfamiliar, Killzone was Guerrilla Games’ answer to Halo back in the PlayStation 2 era. While the series enjoyed moderate success, it ultimately faded into obscurity as Guerrilla focused its efforts on the critically acclaimed Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequels. However, a dedicated fanbase has kept the flame alive, constantly clamoring for a revival.
According to MP1st”>MP1st, Sony is reportedly in the early stages of bringing Killzone back from the grave. And get this – Bulletstorm and Outriders developer People Can Fly has been brought on board to co-develop the project! While details are scarce, it appears we’ll be getting a Killzone remaster or remake. The most likely candidate for this revival is the original Killzone, released way back in 2004.
This news comes amidst a period of significant change for Guerrilla Games. The studio recently rebooted PlayStation recently rebooted Horizon multiplayer spinoff Hunters Gathering following negative feedback”>Horizon multiplayer spinoff Hunters Gathering, which received mixed reactions. Following that, and according to MP1st, the studio will move on to Killzone. Furthermore, Bloomberg”>Bloomberg reports that Guerrilla has until December to impress PlayStation bosses with Hunters Gathering’s next milestone. However, some staff have already been reassigned to another project with a deadline at the end of this year. A “tiny team” is also reportedly working on the next Horizon single-player game (let’s call it Horizon 3), but that’s still years away.
A Killzone remaster or remake could be the perfect way for PlayStation to reintroduce the franchise and potentially pave the way for a brand new entry down the line. Either way, this is exciting news for long-time Killzone fans who haven’t heard anything about the series since Killzone Shadow Fall”>Killzone Shadow Fall on PlayStation 4.
Speaking in 2024, Guerrilla Games art director Roy Postma expressed a clear preference for the brighter and more vibrant world of Horizon over the darker and more violent aesthetic of Killzone. “We were done with it as a team,” Postma said”>Postma stated. “As a studio, we needed to refresh the palette. It was, by choice, the opposite of Killzone.”
Postma also highlighted Horizon’s broader appeal: “I think the themes that this story and the characters represent are relatable for all ages and people, like having a found family of friends and finding your place in the world.”
