Season 4 in Overwatch has brought a familiar frenzy: the rank reset. It’s that time of year when players, from seasoned veterans to casual newcomers, scramble to reclaim their hard-earned positions. But this season brings more than just the usual climb; it introduces a brand new rank: Emerald.
Emerald: Bridging the Gap
Positioned strategically between Platinum and Diamond, Emerald aims to address the growing skill disparity that often plagues those two ranks. As Blizzard themselves stated, “The majority of our players are in Gold and Platinum,” adding a new rank closer to the middle of the skill curve provides a more accurate representation of player skill and offers a fresh goal to strive for. This is a welcome change, as the existing system often lumped together vastly different skill levels within those two tiers.
Season 4 is packed with smart adjustments, and this new rank is arguably one of the most impactful. The need for a buffer between Platinum and Diamond was undeniable; the existing system often resulted in chaotic matches where players with significantly different skill sets were forced to compete against each other. However, it seems that all this chaos has now been neatly packaged into the Emerald rank.
During my own placement matches, I only spent a few games in Emerald before quickly climbing to Diamond and beyond. And frankly, I’m glad I didn’t have to linger there for long. The experience was… intense. Matches felt frantic, with players on both sides oscillating between moments of brilliance and frustratingly basic mistakes. It was difficult to predict the flow of a team fight, making it a truly unpredictable environment.
This unpredictability makes sense when considering the intended player base for Emerald: players who are above average but perhaps not quite ready for the level of teamwork and strategic restraint found in higher ranks. However, that doesn’t make it any less frustrating to experience firsthand. I lost count of the unnecessary flanks, panic ultimates, and repeated staggers I witnessed during those brief stints in Emerald.
Then there’s the player dynamic itself.
While this could simply be a matter of bad luck on my part, I noticed a significant drop in toxicity once I cleared Emerald. Now, I’m not saying that every single game is free from negativity, but there was often one player who seemed determined to complain and blame everyone else for their misfortunes rather than taking responsibility for their own actions.
I understand that sometimes you can play the best game of your life and still end up on the losing side. After all, Overwatch is a team-based game. If your teammates aren’t performing at their best, there’s only so much you can do to carry them. However, it’s important to remember that the only person you have complete control over is yourself. Recognizing this and focusing on your own performance is half the battle in Overwatch.
For example, if you find yourself with a tank who is constantly diving into the enemy backline without any support from their team, it can be incredibly frustrating, especially if they lack awareness of line-of-sight angles. However, it’s important to adapt and work with what you have. In such situations, I often switch to a dive composition myself, recognizing that adapting my playstyle to better complement the team is more effective than simply complaining.
It seems like a simple concept, but I was surprised by how few players were willing to make that adjustment, compromise, or admit that they might not be as proficient with a particular hero as they initially thought.
Emerald has certainly made a name for itself in the short time since its introduction. Hopefully, the rank will stabilize as the season progresses. Rank resets often bring a degree of initial disruption, but that doesn’t diminish my sympathy for those currently stuck in Emerald. From my own experience and from what I’s heard from friends, it’s a pretty volatile environment right now. So, good luck to anyone still navigating those mines. But rest assured, there’s only up (or down) from there.
