In a move that could reshape the landscape of independent film distribution, AMC Theatres is stepping into the role of producer and distributor with the launch of Leawood Films. This new venture aims to bring smaller, completed films to theaters, offering filmmakers an alternative path to reach audiences.
A New Era for Indie Film?
Launched on August 31, 2026, Leawood Films represents a significant shift in AMC’s business model. The company recognizes the growing demand for diverse cinematic experiences and aims to fill a gap in the market by providing a platform for independent filmmakers who might otherwise struggle to secure theatrical releases. This isn’t just about showing movies; it’s about actively participating in their creation and distribution.
AMC Entertainment chairman and CEO Adam Aron highlighted the growing appetite for independent films, stating, “Ultimately, moviegoers consistently demonstrate their appetite for a wide variety of theatrical content, and we believe there are more outstanding films that deserve the opportunity to find audiences on the big screen.” Through Leawood Films, AMC aims to offer filmmakers not only access to theater screens but also attractive financial terms and leverage its extensive marketing capabilities and industry relationships.
This move is particularly relevant given recent trends in filmmaking. Many critically acclaimed films have been produced on relatively modest budgets (think Obsession or Backrooms), demonstrating that compelling stories don’t always require massive funding. The success of YouTube star Markiplier’s independent horror film, Iron Lung, which garnered significant hype and secured theatrical releases from AMC and other major chains, further underscores the potential for indie films to thrive in a traditional cinema setting.
Aron emphasized that Leawood Films is designed to address the existing excess capacity within the movie theater industry. “We can assure them the availability of movie theatre screens and attractive economics, as well as have them benefit from our relationships across the exhibition industry, our proven marketing capabilities, and our extensive experience connecting theatrical content with moviegoing audiences.” By bringing more films to theaters, AMC hopes to create a win-win situation for both filmmakers and audiences.

Interestingly, Markiplier also explored distributing independent films on YouTube. This highlights how major entertainment companies are taking note of shifting audience demands and exploring alternative distribution models. AMC’s move with Leawood Films is just one example of this broader trend.
The board of advisors for Leawood Films includes industry veterans such as former Warner Bros Group chairman Toby Emmerich, former Walt Disney Studios marketing president Ricky Strauss, and former Paramount distribution veteran Kyle Davies. This strong leadership team suggests that AMC is serious about making Leawood Films a success.
AMC describes this venture as a “low-risk opportunity” with the potential to unearth the next big cinematic sensation. Perhaps Nicole Kidman was onto something when she suggested that AMC Theatres “make movies better.” Only time will tell if Leawood Films can truly revolutionize the indie film landscape, but one thing is certain: it’s a development worth watching.
