With Kingdom Hearts IV officially slated for a late 2027 release, the hype is real, and fans are revisiting previous installments, leading to a surge in popularity.

The Ever-Expanding Kingdom Hearts Universe

This isn’t just a challenge for players; even the development team occasionally finds itself navigating the complexities of its own creation.

Enter the Loremaster: A Dedicated Story Guide

During an August 2026 interview with Famitsu, series creator Tetsuya Nomura revealed that Square Enix brought in a loremaster to maintain consistency and explain the convoluted plot, even to Disney. The storyline is so intricate that it requires dedicated expertise to keep everything on track.

“As the Kingdom Hearts series has continued, the number of characters has inevitably increased, and the story has become more complex,” Nomura explained. “For example, with the newly announced anime series, the number of external people involved in the Kingdom Hearts series has increased, and explaining the settings and scenarios each time has become quite difficult.”

Fortunately, staff working on the ‘χ series’ had someone who meticulously compiled and organized the settings of past Kingdom Hearts series in an easy-to-understand way. This individual not only explained the scenarios and settings to Disney but also officially joined the Kingdom Hearts IV team as a proofreader at Disney’s request.

Disney Needs Help Too!

This “proofreader” is responsible for communicating the overarching story to Disney, breaking down complex plot points, characters, and lore using visual diagrams. Nomura emphasized that this individual is well-liked because they explain things to Disney as clearly as possible. Their role internally is to proofread the script, ensuring there are no inconsistencies between the current narrative and established lore. This expertise was particularly valuable given the deep connection between Kingdom Hearts IV and the χ titles.

Nomura also clarified that while this individual isn’s involved in writing the story, their ability to connect the dots between past events and present narratives is crucial for maintaining consistency. For those unfamiliar with the χ series, which primarily appeared on web browsers and mobile devices, don’t worry; key character traits and personalities will be reflected within Kingdom Hearts 4 – Official Coco Extended Gameplay Trailer | D23 2026.

The fact that even Disney itself requires a loremaster to navigate the complexities of the Kingdom Hearts story is a testament to just how intricate the plot has become. It’s so overwhelming that we at IGN felt compelled to create a video explaining the lore in just five minutes!
