Get ready for a blast from the past! Whispers are circulating that Guerrilla Games, the legendary studio behind Horizon Zero Dawn and Killzone, might be dusting off one of PlayStation’s most iconic first-person shooters. According to a report from Killzone”>Mp1st, a remastered version of Killzone is in development.
A Blast From The Past
The rumor suggests that Guerrilla Games is partnering with a third-party studio for this project. While Mp1st couldn’t secure definitive confirmation, their sources point towards People Can Fly, the talented team behind Bulletstorm and Outriders, as well as collaborators on several Gears of War titles. This would be an exciting collaboration, bringing together the pedigree of Guerrilla with the innovative spirit of People Can Fly.
Currently, Guerrilla Games is focused on Horizon Hunters Gathering, a multiplayer monster-hunting game set in the expansive Horizon universe. The report indicates that the Killzone remaster “was initially planned as Guerrilla’s next major project.” However, due to “negative feedback” surrounding the reboot of Horizon Hunters Gathering, the studio is now prioritizing getting that project back on track.
Killzone: A PlayStation Classic
For those unfamiliar, Killzone was a flagship FPS series for PlayStation. The original game, released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, received mixed reviews, with a Metacritic score of 70/100. However, its sequel, been rebooted”>Killzone 2, was a massive leap forward, earning a stunning 91 on Metacritic and garnering numerous awards. It truly showcased the power of the PS3.
While it hasn’t been officially confirmed which game is being remastered, Mp1st believes it will be the original Killzone. Interestingly, this wouldn’t be the first time the original Killzone has received a visual upgrade; the stayed online”>Killzone Trilogy, released in 2011 for PS3, already remastered it to support 720p resolution and included trophies. This new remaster could potentially bring even greater improvements.
A Long-Awaited Return
It’s been over a decade since the last Killzone game, with our reviewer”>Killzone: Shadow Fall being the most recent installment in 2013. While it was a launch title for the PS4, it wasn’t universally praised. At Polygon, our reviewer considered it to be “stuck in the past” with too many “shooter clichés.” Despite this, the multiplayer servers remained online until 2022, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the Killzone franchise.
