Playground Games is back, and they’re bringing a beloved franchise roaring into the modern gaming landscape with Fable. After years of anticipation, I finally got hands-on time with an exclusive Gamescom demo, and let me tell you, the confidence radiating from the developers was palpable – and justified.
A Familiar Yet Refined Combat System

From the moment I stepped into the demo, it was clear that Playground Games understands what made the original Fable games so special. The combat system is instantly recognizable to longtime fans – a satisfying mix of melee attacks, ranged options, and magical abilities. In my first playthrough, I wielded a hammer, smashing skeletons while strategically using spells to control the battlefield. The second run gave me an over-powered character with late-game items and crossbows.

Choice and Consequence: A Playground Games Trademark

What truly sets Fable apart is the depth of its systems. The spells were different on the second go, too. Instead of thunder/fire/chicken, I had a spell that could lift all the enemies into the air – ripe for picking off with ranged attacks or electrifying the terrain – before slamming them back down again. I also had a sort-of ‘Force Push’ move that synergised nicely with the lift, a combination that cleared mobs away when I was getting overwhelmed.

A Star-Studded Cast and Immersive World

Beyond the gameplay mechanics, Fable boasts a stellar cast of characters. Matt King, best known for his iconic portrayal of Super Hans in Peep Show, delivers a surprisingly nuanced performance. His presence adds a layer of humor and heart to the game that is both unexpected and welcome.

Looking Ahead: A Promising Future for Fable

While I only experienced a small slice of what Fable has to offer, the demo left me incredibly excited. The combination of familiar gameplay elements with modern design sensibilities is a winning formula. With its emphasis on player choice, engaging combat, and memorable characters, Fable is shaping up to be a must-play title for fans of the original games and newcomers alike.
