Legendary game developer Hideki Kamiya, the creative force behind iconic franchises like Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, and the acclaimed remake of Resident Evil 2, has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding physical versus digital games. The Digital Shift and Preservation Concerns

Kamiya’s perspective comes amidst Sony’s recent announcement to end production of all physical game discs starting January 2028. This move has sparked considerable discussion within the gaming community, raising concerns about accessibility and long-term preservation.

In a candid interview with Video Игры Chronicle, Kamiya revealed that he personally doesn’t purchase physical games anymore, opting for digital downloads. However, he stressed that his personal preference doesn’t diminish the importance of ensuring these games remain accessible to future players.

“That’s the big thing for me, is whether or not the IP holders are going to take responsibility for ensuring that all of these games will continue to be available to future generations in order for them to be played,” Kamiya stated. “Whether that’s physically or digitally is less important to me, just so long as these games will be available to people in the future.”

He further elaborated on his concerns about older classic games becoming unplayable on modern hardware and expressed hope that IP holders would prioritize preserving gaming history for both gameplay and cultural significance. “So to me, it’s less important whether the games are made available physically or digitally, but that they’re made available at all.”

A Growing Movement for Game Preservation

Kamiya’s sentiments reflect a broader trend within the gaming industry. Many publishers have begun re-releasing older titles for modern platforms, with some even remaking them completely. This not only allows new audiences to experience these classics but also provides long-time fans with updated ways to enjoy them.

Beyond publisher initiatives, fan-driven movements like “Stop Killing Игры” and the “Video Game History Foundation” are actively working to protect gaming history. Stop Killing Игры recently joined a Dutch consumer group in a lawsuit against PlayStation, aiming to establish legal frameworks that require publishers to maintain servers for live-service games even after official support ends. The Video Game History Foundation, on the other hand, focuses on collecting and preserving games to “preserve, celebrate, and teach” the public about the history of video games.

Pushback Against a Fully Digital Future

Despite Sony’s move towards an all-digital future, there remains a strong movement from players who oppose it. Lawmakers in Mexico have even introduced an anti-trust lawsuit against the company, accusing it of engaging in “anti-competitive practices.”

The debate surrounding physical versus digital games is far from over, and Kamiya’s perspective highlights the crucial role of preservation in ensuring that gaming history remains accessible to future generations.
