GTA 6 Hype Sparks Console Sales Surge, Giving Sony and Microsoft a Vital Boost

According to data reported by The Game Business, the excitement surrounding GTA 6 has fueled a significant sales week for both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. In the UK, PS5 sales jumped an impressive 33%, while Xbox Series X/S sales saw a healthy 34% boost. This is welcome news for console manufacturers who have been navigating challenging market conditions.

Navigating Market Challenges

The Price Factor

Newzoo analyst Ronan Patrick points out that the PS5 is currently “67% more expensive” than at launch when adjusted for inflation, while Xbox consoles are double the price. This means that while GTA 6 will undoubtedly drive sales, its impact might not be as monumental as it would have been under different economic circumstances.

Looking Ahead

“We expect, because of [GTA] and Call of Duty, to see an uptick in the install base,” Patrick explains. “Not as high as it would have been… Nothing particularly massive.” The combined impact of GTA 6 and Call of Duty is expected to drive a noticeable increase in the number of consoles in homes.

Nintendo’s Unexpected Boost

Interestingly, even Nintendo is seeing a positive impact. Despite not having a direct competitor to GTA 6 on the horizon, Nintendo Switch 2 sales also rose by a third during the same week. This could be attributed to gamers anticipating a potential the Switch 2 price increase.
