Embark Studios’ free-to-play co-op shooter, Arc Raiders, has faced criticism regarding its content and update cadence since launch. Now, the game’s executive producer is addressing these concerns head-on, acknowledging that the development team struggled to keep pace with player demand for new content. But don’t despair, Raiders! A significant update, “Frozen Trail,” is on the horizon, promising a much-needed injection of fresh gameplay and improvements.
Addressing Player Feedback
The core issue seems to be the disparity between player expectations and the rate at which new content was being delivered. Players, driven by their inherent desire for progression and completion, quickly exhausted the available activities within Arc Raiders. This led to frustration and a sense that the game’s longevity was limited.
Executive producer Aleksander Grøndal explained in a recent statement, “We didn’t really expect that amount of players to show up and play ARC Raiders.” This unexpected surge in popularity put immense pressure on the smaller development team. The initial challenges stemmed from an underestimation of player engagement and the subsequent struggle to provide content at a pace that matched their enthusiasm.
The “Frozen Trail” Update: A Glimmer of Hope
While the team initially aimed to rapidly deploy updates and new features, they soon realized that maintaining a consistent stream of high-quality content was unsustainable with their current resources. This led to situations where updates felt rushed or didn’t fully address player concerns.
“We have very dedicated people playing the game,” Grøndal added. “We had some challenges around how much content there is in the game, how much progression there is in the game. We had some, but the players wanted more.”
The upcoming “Frozen Trail” update represents a significant effort to rectify these issues. Grøndal has outlined plans for a comprehensive overhaul, including a redesigned ranking system, new arcs (missions), improvements to storage management, and a brand-new map. This update aims to address many of the mechanical and content-related questions that players have raised.

The challenge for Embark Studios lies in finding a balance between delivering consistent content and maintaining the quality that defines their vision for Arc Raiders. While quantity is often crucial for live-service games, the team seems committed to prioritizing “quality over quantity,” aiming to create experiences that are both engaging and meaningful.
