Godzilla vs. GTA: Why This Remastered Classic Isn’t Scared of the Rockstar Storm

Get ready to stomp some digital monsters! Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered is charging into PC and consoles this November, and while it’s arriving in the same month as the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, the development team at Pipeworks and publisher Atari aren’t losing any sleep. In fact, they’re embracing the chaos.

The internet has been buzzing with memes and jokes about the release date proximity, but for Simon Strange, a longtime Pipeworks developer and senior designer on the project, it’s all in good fun. “I have also loved all those memes,” he said in an interview with IGN. “Honestly, wasn’t even in our heads at all when we were picking the release date.”

While Rockstar’s return to Vice City is undoubtedly a monumental event for gaming, the team behind Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered had their sights set on something far more important: celebrating Godzilla’s birthday. November 3rd isn’t just any date; it’s “Godzilla Day,” commemorating the original film’s release in 1954.

Respecting the King of the Monsters

“So, the GTA thing, that’s hilarious,” Strange continued. “It’s a really cute meme. We’ve all really enjoyed that. It was never part of our thinking. I wasn’t looking at that calendar and being worried in any way, or thinking about what other games are coming out because the Godzilla fans are very excited for it. They’d buy it on any day that it came out, and putting it on Godzilla’s birthday, that’s just respectful.”

The decision to lock in November 3rd was a matter of honoring the iconic monster and ensuring his debut on modern platforms was nothing short of legendary. While Atari acknowledged being “certainly aware of the proximity” to GTA 6’s release, they felt confident that both games could carve out their own space in the gaming landscape.

“There were a number of factors at play that led to the selection of November 12 as the release date for Barbie Rewind,” an Atari spokesperson told IGN. “In the end, it made the most sense in our calendar, and we felt the cozy/retro vibe of Rewind and the Barbie brand was going to pull in its own, discrete audience.”
