Bittersweet Victory: Devs Behind Acclaimed Star Wars Game Reportedly Furloughed

The Force is strong with “Star Wars Zero Company,” the debut title from Bit Reactor, and it’s already being hailed as the best-received Star Wars game in over two decades. However, a cloud of disappointment hangs over this triumph: reports are surfacing that many of the talented developers who poured their hearts into creating this XCOM-inspired masterpiece were reportedly furloughed just weeks before its release.

A Devastating Blow to Morale

Former Bit Reactor developer Zachariah Scott took to LinkedIn to express his dismay, stating, “It is sick and weird to have all of these EA and Disney folks as well as Bit Reactor Senior staff making all of these 10/10 posts about Star Wars Zero Company being such a huge success and praising the work of the team while seemingly concealing the fact that the team was furloughed weeks ago.” This sentiment reflects a deep sense of betrayal within the development community, who feel their hard work is being overshadowed by corporate optics.

A Skeleton Crew Left to Support Launch

According to a new report by Game File, as many as 80 percent of Bit Reactor’s staff were furloughed in the weeks leading up to the game’s August 27th launch. This leaves a “skeleton crew” responsible for addressing any post-launch issues and bugs. While a studio representative confirmed the furloughs to Game File, they declined to disclose the exact number of employees affected.

Exceptional Reviews Amidst Internal Turmoil

The timing is particularly disheartening given the game’s exceptional early reviews. “Star Wars Zero Company” currently holds the highest Metacritic score of any Star Wars game since “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – Sith Lords” in 2004. The success on both critical and commercial fronts only amplifies the frustration felt by those who were let go.

Legal Battles and Uncertain Futures

The situation is further complicated by an ongoing lawsuit filed by Bit Reactor’s former chief operating officer, Alison Kelly. She accuses studio co-founder Greg Foertsch of forcing her out of the company and denying her an equal ownership stake. Foertsch has denied these claims, arguing that Kelly’s role was reduced due to poor work performance. The trial is not scheduled until 2027, leaving many questions unanswered about the future of Bit Reactor.

The fate of the furloughed employees remains uncertain, and it’s unclear whether a sequel to “Star Wars Zero Company” will even be considered by Electronic Arts, especially given their recent acquisition by Saudi Arabia. This entire situation serves as a stark reminder of the often-harsh realities faced within the gaming industry, where creative talent can be caught in the crossfire of corporate decisions.
