Explore New Horrors: A First Look at East Haddonfield in Halloween: The Game

Get ready to relive the terror! Halloween: The Game is bringing a fresh, chilling experience to PS5 players on September 28th. Today, we’re diving deep into a brand-new map that expands the iconic world of Haddonfield: East Haddonfield. This isn’s just another location; it’s an opportunity to explore previously unseen corners of this infamous town and uncover new layers of horror.

Expanding the Canvas of Fear

While Halloween: The Game features recognizable locations from the films, East Haddonfield represents a deliberate expansion of our vision for Haddonfield. We wanted to fill in the gaps, creating spaces that hinted at untold stories lurking just beyond the familiar suburban landscape. This new area moves away from the typical residential setting, venturing into industrial zones, small businesses, and sprawling farmlands, all connected by highways and train tracks.

A Landscape of Unease

East Haddonfield is characterized by its open, rural feel, centered around a massive grain mill. This isn’s just a backdrop; it’s a focal point for intense gameplay. The mill itself offers a complex network of interior and exterior spaces, leading to unexpected confrontations and desperate escapes. Scattered around the mill are wrap-around porches, farm equipment, dirt parking lots – all signs that you’re on the outskirts of town, where danger lurks in every shadow.

Fans will also recognize the neon-soaked Rabbit in Red Lounge and Phelps Garage, both offering familiar haunts within this new environment. The overall design emphasizes chaos: haphazard sight lines, uneven fence configurations, and buildings piled together in ways that encourage strategic stealth and unique evasion tactics. The openness of the map provides enticing escape routes, but players must be constantly vigilant, knowing that Michael Myers is always a threat.

Embodying the Terror: Playing as Michael

“In the original Halloween movie, Michael drives everything,” says the design director for Halloween: The Game. “I think we can all recall seeing him for the first time and how he awakens that powerful, deep fear in the audience.” The development team was committed to recreating that same sense of dread in the game. This meant creating a safe neighborhood atmosphere only to shatter it with the introduction of an agent of unimaginable chaos.

Every aspect of Michael Myers had to be unsettling: his arsenal, his capabilities, even his walk. He does in the game what he does in the movies: appearing where you least expect, keeping up no matter what, and killing in unexpected ways. He’s a constant threat, driving the terror that permeates every moment of gameplay. Playing as Michael is designed to be satisfying and powerful, capturing the quintessential slasher feel.

Asymmetrical Horror: A 1v4 Experience

The game embraces an asymmetrical approach with one player taking on the role of Michael Myers, relentlessly hunting four survivors. Michael grows stronger as matches progress, becoming a dominant force across the map. Conversely, the survivors know that every minute they survive increases their chances of encountering the masked killer. This creates a constant state of tension and anticipation.

Inspired by the Masterpiece: Paying Homage to John Carpenter

The original 1978 film served as the ultimate blueprint for Halloween: The Game. The development team meticulously studied the film’s camera work, lenses, color grading, and overall aesthetic of the time period. Extensive research was conducted to ensure authenticity, and invaluable access was granted to key figures involved in the film’s creation.

Nick Castle, the original Michael Myers, provided motion capture and shared his insights on capturing the character’s essence. Regular conversations with Malek Akkad at Compass International Pictures ensured that the game honored the film’s legacy. Even John Carpenter himself offered his perspective, influencing the emphasis on the game’s story mode and its chapters, one of which unfolds on the East Haddonfield map.

Halloween: The Game launches on PS5 September 28th. Prepare to face your fears!
