The Moment That Shook Paradis
If you’re a fan of “Attack on Titan,” you know that Season 2 contains some of the most pivotal moments in the entire series. One scene, in particular, stands out: Eren’s confrontation with Reiner and Bertholdt after a grueling series of events. This is where the bombshell drops – these two soldiers reveal themselves to be the Titan-shifters who breached the wall years ago, leading to unimaginable loss and the tragic death of Eren’s mother. While many are familiar with Yuki Kaji’s masterful take on the line “You damn traitors!”, Bryce Papenbrook’s performance is equally powerful.
During a panel at Anime NYC this August, Papenbrook revealed just how committed he was to portraying Eren’s anguish. “In that moment, he’s more unhinged than ever before,” he explained. “So I literally unhinged my jaw before that take, because I wanted that pain to come through.”
Fellow panelist and voice actor Cristina Vee was understandably stunned. “What do you mean — physically unhinged? On purpose?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Papenbrook confirmed. “Like, physically pushing my jaw out of place to force pain into the feeling because of how Eren was feeling in that moment.” He added, “For Eren, I really wanted to feel what he was feeling, so in Season 1, when he bites his hand, I bit my hand so hard I left bruises.”
The internet exploded with reactions, ranging from shock to awe. One user on X wrote, “Dub hate is so insanely forced, ‘cause how do people see this and call it bad?” Another commented, “He really didn’t have to, but I still love when actors get into the role.”
While “Attack on Titan” has now concluded its epic saga, the world of Paradis isn’t quite over. Fans eagerly await the release of Attack on Titan 3 on December 3, 2026, where they can create their own characters and relive key moments from the show’s final season.
