Rockstar Games is diving deep into the details of GTA 6, and it seems like players will have more agency than ever before. One of the most intriguing aspects revealed so far is the potential for romantic relationships between protagonists Jason and Lucia. But what if you’re not interested in a love story? According to Rockstar developer Rob Nelson, you don’t have to engage with it.

Romance: A Choice, Not an Obligation

In a recent interview with IGN, Nelson emphasized that the romance system is entirely optional. “I have to say it feels great – if you are into it as a concept,” he said. “Don’t bother with it if you aren’t. Up to you.” This statement clearly indicates that players can experience GTA 6 without pursuing any romantic relationships, focusing instead on the action-packed gameplay and criminal underworld.

For those who do want to explore the romance aspect, Nelson hinted at a variety of activities, including holding hands, visiting zoos together, and enjoying romantic strolls. However, he also cautioned that opting out of these interactions might lead to missing out on other elements within the game. “I don’t want to say too much more about this because I don’t want to spoil anything,” Nelson explained.

Nelson further elaborated that the developers wanted to explore whether they could create an emotional resonance within GTA for players who desired it, while also providing mechanisms for those who preferred to simply opt out. “Could we bring some sort of emotional resonance to GTA for people if they wanted to engage with it? Could we also provide mechanisms for people to just opt out of it if they’re not into it?”

Interestingly, Nelson revealed that the developers didn’t initially envision this level of player connection. “This is something we did not know when we started, and it really had to be something we felt our way through.” He added that whether players are getting into trouble, running from the cops, or simply waiting for their partner, playing as Jason and Lucia together feels “very cool” and like you’re “taking care of them, if that’s something you’re into.”

Maintaining a relationship in GTA 6 will require effort, including responding to texts and actively participating in shared experiences. This introduces a new dynamic to the series, where player actions have consequences for their relationships. “It’s new for GTA, this idea of your actions having meaning in terms of how you treat your partner or how violent you are,” Nelson stated.

The overall narrative of GTA 6 will draw inspiration from the classic “Bonnie and Clyde” story. As Nelson put it, “We knew it was the only way for us to go with this game.” For those unfamiliar, Bonnie and Clyde were famous American outlaws who operated in the early 1900s, engaging in numerous crimes, including murder. Their relationship ultimately ended with their deaths at the hands of law enforcement in 1934.
