The Blood of Dawnwalker, the highly anticipated new RPG from ex-CD Projekt Red talent, is already facing a unique challenge: players are modifying the game to remove one of its defining features. While reviews have been largely positive, highlighting the innovative time-pressure mechanic, a popular mod is allowing players to completely bypass it.
The Time Crunch and the Modding Community
In The Blood of Dawnwalker, you play as a man transformed into a vampire with a ticking clock – 30 days to save his family. This creates a compelling sense of urgency, forcing players to make difficult choices about which quests to accept and how to spend their limited time. Every action, from character progression to completing missions, advances the in-game clock. The Better Story Timer mod on NexusMods effectively triples this timeframe, removing the pressure and allowing for a more relaxed playthrough.
While some players appreciate the challenge presented by the time limit, others find it restrictive. The mod’s popularity suggests that many are eager to experience the game without the constant worry of running out of time. This raises an interesting question: is the core mechanic truly enjoyable for everyone, or does it alienate a significant portion of the player base?
“Gamers will do anything they can to not experience a game the way the developers intended,” commented one X/Twitter user. “I think the main issue is that, nowadays, gamers believe every game should be made for them. The issue is that’s rarely the case, and the games that do cater for everyone usually suck. Sometimes, you aren’t the target audience. And that’s perfectly fine.”
A Promising Start for a New Franchise
The Blood of Dawnwalker is intended to be the first installment in a sprawling franchise, potentially spanning multiple eras and even including modern-day settings based on previous trailers. While the future of the series remains uncertain, the game appears to be off to a strong start both critically and commercially.
IGN gave it a 9/10 in its review, praising the inclusion of the in-game clock. “The Blood of Dawnwalker is my new favorite vampire game and one of the best story-driven RPGs I’ve played in a long time,” reads an excerpt from the review. “The day/night cycle that has you juggling human and vampiric forms is awesome, and the constraints placed on how you spend your limited time ends up being one of the coolest, most wonderfully stressful parts of the adventure.”
