We were honored to share this news with you during State of Play, and even better, we’re giving you a first look at gameplay running on the PlayStation 5 Pro. Prepare yourselves!
A New Protagonist, A Familiar Struggle
The trailer opens just as Metro 2039’s new protagonist – The Stranger – emerges from the claustrophobic tunnels and ventures onto the thawing, post-apocalyptic ruins of Moscow.
The Stranger is a former Spartan warrior haunted by a dark past, one he desperately tried to leave behind. As an elite soldier, he’s as brutal as he is adaptable. His Spartan armor marks him out, but beneath that exterior lies something far more complex – and potentially dangerous.
Survival of the Fittest
In this gameplay snippet, The Stranger is on a mission to locate a Novoreich fortress nestled within a nearby dam. Every step he takes on the ravaged surface is fraught with peril. Within seconds, he’s battling radiation, while the crumbling apartment blocks loom overhead, concealing countless threats. “Discover the dangers that await in Metro 2039.”
Metro 2039 is a solo, story-driven FPS experience, and this gameplay showcases the intense combat and exploration that define the series. As The Stranger, players must manage their resources carefully to survive. They’ll have access to a range of weapons and tools, allowing them to choose their approach – whether it’s using a silenced Shatun rifle for deadly headshots, employing Molotov cocktails to clear rooms, or utilizing agility to navigate collapsing structures and deliver devastating shotgun blasts.

In 2021, we were proud to release Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, a pioneering title that brought 60fps ray tracing support to PlayStation 5. For Metro 2039, we’ve built upon that foundation to deliver the most visually stunning Metro experience yet. We’re thrilled to confirm that both PS5 and PS5 Pro players will be able to experience Metro 2039 with ray tracing, running at a smooth 60fps in Performance Mode.
