Xbox “Bloodbath” Looms: More Studios in Peril?

While the chatter about Xbox’s impending exodus has been circulating, the reality behind the scenes appears far more dire than first thought.

Bloomberg correspondent Jason Schreier, in a revealing recap, disclosed that the list of studios facing uncertainty extends beyond the well‑known Ninja Theory, Double Fine, and Compulsion Games. These three, each of whom has produced several PlayStation 5 titles, are currently engaged in talks aimed at securing their continued existence.

Schreier also warns that additional studios are on the chopping block, and that the broader organization is poised for substantial layoffs.

Industry insiders are describing the current situation as a “bloodbath,” a term that has become shorthand for the intense turmoil unfolding behind the scenes. The turmoil isn’t limited to the studios already mentioned; it’s expected to spread further as more companies face pressure and uncertainty.

Microsoft’s fiscal year concludes on June 30, meaning a comprehensive view of the company’s performance and the full impact of recent events will only emerge after that date.

In a detailed video, Schreier explores the root causes that have pushed Xbox to its current brink. He highlights a critical shortfall: the failure to substantially expand Game Pass and to secure a steady stream of developer partnerships on a large scale. This misstep has taken a heavy toll on the organization.

Schreier also notes that the $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard was a staggering financial commitment on its own. More importantly, it instantly added thousands of employees to the division—a sudden swell that coincided with Redmond’s pivot toward AI initiatives, thereby amplifying financial strain across the board.
