DC Studios has officially unveiled the title and details for that quirky, long-rumored spinoff series starring Jimmy Olsen and everyone’s favorite hyperintelligent ape, Gorilla Grodd. Get ready for “The People v. Gorilla Grodd,” a true-crime mockumentary coming to HBO Max!
A Mockumentary Unlike Any Other
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn dropped the news on social media, accompanied by exciting details about the cast and format. Skyler Gisondo returns as Jimmy Olsen, alongside Jimmy Tatro as the surprisingly eloquent Gorilla Grodd. The series promises to be a hilarious blend of comedy and true crime, offering a fresh perspective on a familiar DC character.
The Case of the Century (or is it?)
According to the official logline, “A superintelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City.” In this eight-part docuseries, Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted. Expect plenty of twists, turns, and laugh-out-loud moments as Jimmy delves into the murky depths of Metropolis’ criminal justice system.
The Daily Planet Crew Returns
Joining Skyler Gisondo and Jimmy Tatro is a stellar cast reprising their roles from previous Superman projects. Beck Bennet will be Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover will portray Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce returns as the iconic Perry White. Rounding out the ensemble are Mary Holland (Happiest Season), Eduardo Franco (Booksmart, Stranger Things), Dan Perrault (American Vandal), and Arian Moayed (Wonder Man, Succession). While their specific roles remain under wraps, expect them to add plenty of Daily Planet shenanigans.
From Superma’ to the Courtroom
While “The People v. Gorilla Grodd” might not be what some hardcore comic book fans envisioned, that’s part of its charm. The project has been shrouded in mystery, and now we’re getting a glimpse into its unique brand of humor. American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault are on board as showrunners, writers, and executive producers, promising a fresh and irreverent take on the DC Universe.
“Between Skyler’s wonderful performance and the fantastic chemistry of the Daily Planet cast, we knew coming out of Superma’ that this would be a fun world to explore,” said Gunn and Safran in a joint statement. “We’re excited to work with the brilliant Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda to take the audience down some of the darker and funnier streets and alleyways of the DCU as Jimmy spotlights the Metropolis criminal justice system for his docuseries.”
Yacenda and Perrault added, “We’re excited by the challenge of creating a series that feels less like an entry into the DCU and more like an artifact from it. A Daily Planet original documentary made for the people of Metropolis. We hope it’ll appeal to fans of the comics, comedy and true crime.”
