Insomniac Games has issued its first hotfix for Marvel’s Wolverine, dialing back the opacity of the game’s controversial scent trail mechanic while signaling that a full toggle to disable it may arrive in a future update. The patch went live on September 19 across PlayStation 5, and it arrives amid an ongoing debate over what fans have affectionately dubbed “fart gas”—the neon-colored scent trails Logan uses during certain missions to locate objectives.
The adjustment represents the studio’s first concrete response to a feature that became a flash point in discussions about the game long before its launch. Rather than removing the navigation aid entirely, Insomniac has chosen to tone down its visual intensity, though the team indicated it is still weighing whether players should be able to switch the mechanic off altogether.
A Hotfix With More Than Just Stability Fixes
The September 19 patch was not issued solely to address technical issues. According to Insomniac’s support page, the update also tackled some of the game crashes that certain players had been experiencing, but it went further by modifying how the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators appear on screen.
“Additionally, this hotfix adjusts the presentation of the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators, including reduced opacity to make these visuals less intense. Our team continues to evaluate ways to further improve Senses in the game, including exploring toggleable options for a future update.”

The change was picked up quickly by players, who shared before-and-after comparisons online confirming that the trail had indeed been dialed back. Instead of a dense cloud of neon gas drifting through the world, a more subdued pool of ambient color now sits on the ground in front of Logan. The aid still points players toward their next objective, but it does so with considerably less visual aggression.
A Feature That Outgrew Its Meme Status
The scent trail mechanic drew heavy criticism during Wolverine’s pre-release period, becoming a shorthand target for broader skepticism about the game’s design. Yet even as Insomniac responds to that backlash, it is worth noting that removing the feature would not fundamentally transform the experience into something else entirely.
At its core, Marvel’s Wolverine remains an action-adventure comic book blockbuster built around combat rather than quiet exploration. The studio’s latest PlayStation 5 exclusive centers on tearing through enemies to unlock the next set piece, and it does not aim to be a sprawling ambient open-world title in the vein of last year’s Ghost of Yotei. Whether the scent trail is present or absent, that fundamental identity stays intact.
Looking Ahead
The hotfix marks only the first step in what Insomniac describes as an ongoing evaluation of the game’s Senses system. The studio has explicitly flagged “toggleable options for a future update,” leaving open the possibility that players will eventually be able to disable scent trails and Audio Sense indicators entirely.
Until then, Wolverine remains available on PlayStation 5 with its revised presentation in place. As Insomniac continues to monitor player feedback, the studio faces the delicate task of addressing a widely mocked feature without overcorrecting—or inadvertently drawing even more attention to the very mechanic it is trying to quiet.
