Insomniac Games has released its first major post-launch update for Marvel’s Wolverine, directly responding to one of the most frequent criticisms leveled against the game. Late on September 18, the studio deployed hotfix v1.001.005, which reduces the opacity and intensity of the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators—visual aids that guide players through levels but have drawn significant backlash for being overly prominent.

The update addresses what has emerged as one of the biggest complaints about Marvel’s Wolverine: its tendency to hand-hold players by directing them toward their next objective. Rather than removing these navigation systems entirely, the hotfix softens their presentation, allowing the trails to remain functional while blending more naturally into the game’s realistic environments.

A More Subtle Approach to Navigation

According to a support page on Insomniac’s official website, the v1.001.005 patch does more than tone down visuals. The studio noted that the update “fixes some crash-causing issues” alongside its adjustments to navigation aids. On the presentation front, the team stated it has made changes “including reduced opacity to make these visuals less intense.”

The scent trail previously appeared as a bold, bright blue line cutting through the game’s environments—a stark contrast against the otherwise grounded and detailed level design. Players quickly noticed the change once the patch rolled out. X user and PlayStation influencer Radec highlighted the difference in a post comparing the before-and-after states of the indicator.

The scent trail used to be a bold, bright blue line, really clashing with the realistic environments of the game’s already linear levels. Now, it looks cloudier and like less of a defined line, while still showing players where they need to go.

In its current form, the updated scent trail appears cloudier and far less defined as a discrete line, though it continues to guide players toward their objectives without dominating the visual field.

Further Improvements on the Horizon

The hotfix notes also signal that Insomniac is not finished refining the Sense mechanic. The studio confirmed it “continues to evaluate ways to further improve Sense in the game, including exploring toggleable options for a future update.” This language strongly suggests that players will soon have the ability to disable scent trails entirely—a feature many had requested.

This commitment to addressing feedback follows comments made by Insomniac’s director of communications and marketing James Stevenson. Speaking on X earlier in the week, Stevenson wrote: “We have been 100% listening over the last few days and the team has been cooking hard today in response to some of the feedback,” alluding to ongoing work aimed at resolving player concerns.

While Marvel’s Wolverine didn’t land as glowingly with critics and players as many other single-player PlayStation titles, Insomniac appears responsive to its community. The studio’s willingness to adjust core mechanics so soon after launch demonstrates a genuine effort to improve the experience based on direct feedback.
