Epic Games has revealed that while Unreal Engine 5 has only been available for a little over four years, the studio is already developing its successor, Unreal Engine 6. The first title slated to migrate to the new engine is the popular vehicular soccer game Rocket League, with additional in‑house projects expected to follow shortly.
During the latest Rocket League Championship Series, Epic confirmed that Unreal Engine 6 is officially on the horizon and that Rocket League will be the inaugural game to transition to it. The announcement included a handful of brief clips showcasing enhanced visuals, more realistic reflections, and improved lighting—though the gains appear modest when compared to the best of UE5’s current offerings.
With UE6’s arrival, the lifespan of UE5’s dominance will be unusually short, especially when contrasted with its predecessor, UE4, which reigned for roughly eight years before being superseded. UE3 also enjoyed an eight‑year tenure, twice the projected duration of UE5’s market presence.
It remains unclear why Epic has opted to leapfrog to a new engine rather than further refine UE5. While UE5 already offers industry‑leading graphics and lighting, many developers still grapple with optimization challenges that can hinder performance and stability.
