Strange Scaffold, the studio best known for games that resist easy categorization, has unveiled Something is Wrong with the Library, a new horror-adjacent management title that tasks players with tidying up a library haunted by the dead. The reveal arrived via a trailer posted by the studio on September 28, 2026, and the game is slated for release later this year on Steam, where it can already be wishlisted.

At first glance, Something is Wrong with the Library appears to be a cozy shelving sim, but the studio’s signature brand of unease quickly surfaces. Players take on the role of cleaning and organizing the Alex Dieter Public Library and Center for Reflection during a single tense night, working alongside the library’s former administrator, Phillip Shed, to unravel the dark story buried within its walls.

A Haunting Rooted in Gentrification

Where most cozy organizing games lean into warmth and order, Strange Scaffold has rooted its latest project in a far more uncomfortable premise. The library is haunted because a billionaire “revitalized” a small mountain town by introducing fiber internet, landscaping, and a tech-hub boom, and in the process had a number of homeless people killed and stuffed into the walls of the local library.

“Its shelves are in disarray, books thrown to the floor by supernatural forces and long-departed patrons,” the game’s Steam page explains. “With the help of its former administrator, Phillip Shed, you will clean and organize the library in one tense night, unraveling the story of complicity at its heart and bringing it peace–one shelf at a time.” The in-game library is stocked with real book titles, though whether players will be able to actually read them remains unclear.

The Dewey Decimal System and Modular Chaos

The gameplay leans heavily on the Dewey Decimal System, the classification scheme that organizes library materials into numbered categories. Players must use the system to locate and shelve books, a task complicated by what the studio calls a “modular chaos system” in which every playthrough presents a different set of books to organize.

Among the features teased in the studio’s announcement is a location simply called The Drowning Room, a detail left deliberately mysterious. The studio has offered no further explanation, leaving players to speculate about its role in the game’s unfolding horror.

The choice to center the game on the Dewey Decimal System is notable given the scheme’s fraught history. The system was devised by Melvil Dewey, a figure accused of racism, antisemitism, misogyny, and sexual assault by multiple women, and the classification system itself has been criticized for inherent bias, prompting calls for its dismantlement in schools and libraries. Whether Something is Wrong with the Library engages with this history amid its more fantastical horrors remains to be seen.

A Studio Defined by the Bizarre

Strange Scaffold has built a reputation on games that defy genre conventions, and the studio’s back catalog makes Something is Wrong with the Library feel like a natural fit. The studio has previously delivered titles exploring isekai premises, space-baby trading on the stock market, and the surreal world of Clickolding, earning a following among players drawn to unconventional experiences.

The announcement, shared on Bluesky, paired the studio’s usual deadpan tone with a clear invitation for players to register their interest ahead of launch. The Steam store page, which lists the game under app ID 3971340, now serves as the central hub for those wanting to follow development.

Looking Ahead

Something is Wrong with the Library is due to arrive before the end of 2026, giving players just over a month to anticipate its release. Until then, the studio has directed interested buyers to wishlist the title on Steam, where interest can be tracked and launch notifications enabled.

As one of the few games to place library organization at its center, Something is Wrong with the Library stands apart in a crowded market. Whether it can balance its organizing mechanics with its darker themes of complicity and gentrification will become clear at launch, but Strange Scaffold has already made a strong case for why players should take a closer look at what is wrong with the library.
