The racing genre, while consistently delivering thrills, often feels trapped in familiar patterns. But what if a game dared to break free from those constraints and inject some fresh DNA into the formula? That’s precisely what Star Wars: Galactic Racer“>Star Wars: Galactic Racer aims to achieve, drawing inspiration from unexpected corners of gaming to create a truly unique experience. While it might initially evoke memories of the classic Star Wars Episode 1: Pod Racer, Galactic Racer adds a surprising twist with elements of roguelite gameplay and a dash of and a dash of Burnout“>Burnout-style intensity.

A Genre-Bending Approach

“Our intention was actually to move the genre forward,” explains Fuse Games CEO Matt Webster. “We’ve made a lot of racing games in the past, and we love racing. This game came together because of a shared love of racing and Star Wars, but we needed to evolve. It needed to change; it needed to be something to push it forward and modernize it. It’s probably the last major genre that hasn’t really had a transformative injection of elements from other genres into racing.”

Fuse Games sought to create a racing adventure where story and character are paramount, all wrapped in a runs-based structure designed for infinite replayability. “Racing thrives on replayability,” Webster emphasizes. “We asserted that these things would be a great mix, and now, as it comes to life, people are coming for the Star Wars arcade racing action, but there’s a boatload of depth in there.”

Multiplayer Mayhem with a Twist

The question arises: how does this unconventional approach translate to multiplayer? Online competition is crucial for any racing title, but roguelite elements can sometimes clash with traditional competitive formats. However, Fuse Games has found a clever solution by leaning into the underworld aspect of Star Wars and introducing betting mechanics.

“Multiplayer is amazing in this game,” Webster explains. “What we’ve done is take that run-based chase and compressed it into about 25, 30 minutes.” In Speeder Tours, there are 12 players, while Pod Racing Tours feature eight. Both follow a structure of six events: the first five are build chases where finishing position determines rewards and available parts. Crucially, players bet on their finishing positions. “If I’m confident, I’m going to go all in,” Webster says. “I’m going to say I’m going to come [place] in the top three. If I achieve that, I get an epic reward. If I don’t, I don’t get as good a reward.”

“Every time, there’s a decent opportunity for you to progress,” Webster continues. “This solves a great challenge we’ve faced in the past where if you didn’t come first in a series of races online, you might think, ‘Well, I’m done.’ Now, everyone has a chance to claw back victory because the first five events are about building the best vehicle you can for the showdown event. The very last event is one where you put it all on the line, and there you’re betting on who’s going to win.”
