After twelve issues exploring the aftermath of a galactic catastrophe, IDW Publishing’s critically acclaimed comic series Star Trek: The Last Starship is hurtling toward its conclusion. Writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing are set to close out their saga with Issue 12 on October 21, delivering an ending that the creative team says they have envisioned since before writing a single page of the prestige maxi-series.

The series, which follows the resurrection of Captain James T. Kirk in the 31st century and his collision course with Captain Delacourt Sato, arrives at a pivotal moment for the franchise. With bağlantı”>Star Trek: Starfleet Academy cancelled and bağlantı”>Strange New Worlds facing an impending end, IDW’s flagship comic continues to tell bold stories within the iconic sci-fi universe.

A Story Built Around Conflict and Alliance

Everything in the series converges on its final arc as Kirk and Sato are forced to confront their differences. The two captains clash furiously over the how and why of their mission, yet share an unwavering drive to save the Federation and preserve the legacy of Starfleet. That shared purpose is what will ultimately force them into alliance against a galaxy teetering on the brink of ruin.

The creative team has structured the twelve-issue run as four three-issue chapters spanning 100 years of the timeline following The Burn, an event that devastated the franchise’s universe. According to Kelly, this format was never intended to stretch indefinitely.

“In our minds, 12 issues was always the target. The Last Starship was designed as a prestige maxi-series – four three-issue chapters that cover 100 years of the Burn. This was never meant to go forever – with Disco on the horizon, we even know how things will end up. But HOW it ends – that’s where our story lives, and that finale gives the entire story its shape.”

Lanzing echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of a deliberate ending.

“The most important part of a story is its ending – and we’ve known the ending of TLS since before we wrote page 1.”

The Emerald Chain as Dark Reflection

At the center of the conflict sits the Emerald Chain, a mob-like protection racket that exploits the post-Burn climate. Kelly described the organization not as an outright opposite to the Federation, but rather as its dark reflection – capitalists and liars who understand that wealth comes from systems of exploitation.

“They’re not evil…they’re selfish,” Kelly explained. “And ultimately, that’s the real enemy of the UFP, which is to say the enemy of Gene Roddenberry’s IDIC – Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. If you care only about yourself and what you can gain, it’s impossible to celebrate the differences that make other people incredible.”

The writers noted that this thematic exploration runs deep throughout their seven-year run writing Star Trek comics for IDW. The question of whether the Federation’s ideals can survive the galaxy’s darkest hour is one they have revisited repeatedly.

“If Starfleet can face the worst of the universe and still make it, perhaps we can too. Will you get a definitive answer? Yes. Issue Twelve is waiting.”

The Challenge of Time Dilation

Lately, the series has relied on time dilation to advance its narrative across the century-spanning tale. The writers described this as both a technical challenge and an emotional device that strips their crew of everything they once knew.

“We wanted the Omega’s mission to take everything from its crew – and that includes every semblance of the lives they’ve known,” Kelly said, noting that by Issue 11, everyone the crew loved “back home” is dead or dying. Lanzing called it what makes the story unique within Star Trek.

A New Chapter for the Writers

With their flagship run drawing to a close, Kelly and Lanzing are passing the baton to new commanders Christopher Cantwell and Charlie Jane Anders, who will take over major Star Trek titles. The duo is moving on to other projects, including a new Dungeons & Dragons series launching in November from Dark Horse.

“Now, is that to say that you’ll never see us on a Star Trek comic again? I think we love it too much to stay away forever,” Lanzing said. Kelly added with hope: “We hope the next time you see our name attached to Star Trek, it’ll be on TV.”

Star Trek: The Last Starship #12 will be released on October 21, with a final order cutoff of September 14. Fans can preorder a copy at bağlantı”>their local comic shop.
