In a moment that perfectly encapsulates the ongoing saga of Star Citizen, a recent livestream intended to showcase the highly anticipated Siege of Orison mission quickly devolved into a chaotic, bug-ridden spectacle. The event, hosted by Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), aimed to demonstrate the intended gameplay experience for players, but instead provided an unintentionally hilarious glimpse behind the curtain.
A Mission Gone Wrong
The livestream began with content director Jared Huckaby explaining that the goal was to show players “how it’s supposed to work.” However, almost immediately, things started to go sideways. The mission was plagued by technical issues, and the developers themselves seemed visibly frustrated. One particularly cringe-worthy moment occurred when developer Elliot jokingly told his colleague Olli to “kill himself,” only to quickly add “in game” as an afterthought. The awkward laughter that followed did little to ease the tension.
The final nail in the coffin came when Huckaby, seemingly exasperated by the ongoing problems, abruptly “killed” Olli on camera. Olli’s bewildered reaction and subsequent attempt to salvage the situation with a forced smile only added to the surreal nature of the event.
Star Citizen, announced way back in 2012, continues its long journey towards an official release. Despite raising over a billion dollars through crowdfunding, including sales of expensive starter packs and even more extravagant ships that cost thousands of dollars, the game remains in early access. The disastrous livestream has sparked numerous discussions online, with many players dissecting the bugs encountered by the development team broke down the bugs the dev team members experienced. While some expressed gratitude for the “honest look” at the game’s current state expressed gratitude that the stream happened at all, others remain skeptical about its eventual release.
