Square Enix scraps original Dragon Quest 12, will now release as Dragon Quest 12 Beyond Dreams

Square Enix has revealed that the long‑awaited Dragon Quest 12 has been given a fresh start, emerging this time as Dragon Quest 12 Beyond Dreams.

Analysis: The decision to reboot the title signals a strategic pivot by Square Enix to align the franchise with contemporary storytelling trends, potentially widening its appeal and revitalizing sales momentum for the series.

What was initially unveiled as Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate has been completely overhauled, boasting a new protagonist and an entirely different narrative arc that departs from the original concept.

Back in 2021, Square Enix announced five new Dragon Quest titles, including the much‑anticipated 12th entry. In a 2023 interview, series creator Yuji Horii confirmed that development was still underway, promising incremental updates as the project progressed.

During this year’s Dragon Quest 40th‑anniversary livestream, fans eagerly awaited fresh details about the RPG, only to be surprised by the announcement of a full reboot.

In an exciting development, Square Enix has unveiled plans for multiple Dragon Quest titles, yet the release date for the highly anticipated Dragon Quest 12 Beyond Dreams remains undisclosed. The gaming giant has, however, offered a sneak peek into the game’s protagonist.

Expanding their collaboration with Nintendo, Square Enix announced not one but two new additions to the Dragon Quest series. Among them is Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, set to grace both the current and upcoming Nintendo Switch platforms.
