The PlayStation 5 gaming landscape is about to get a whole lot more interesting, thanks to Sony’s recent State of Play”>State of Play event. From Konami’s jazzy new RPG Rhapsody in Scarlet to the return of Maneater, and even welcome updates like Until Dawn 2, there was something for everyone. And, as always, the showcase culminated in a deep dive into a spotlight game: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Oh, and that game now has a release date!
Resident Evil: A Sewer-Dwelling Hero
The show kicked off with a movie trailer for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil. Our hero emerges from a sewer, delivers a witty one-liner that would make Leon Kennedy proud, and then sprints away from a horde of zombies attempting to take him down by leaping from rooftops. It’s an unconventional approach to homicide, but when dealing with zombies whose brains are essentially mush, you have to adjust your expectations.
Wolverine: A Glimpse into the Beast Within
Wolverine is just around the corner, but Insomniac treated us to a movie-style trailer. The focus was primarily on the game’s narrative, though there were also some action-packed scenes sprinkled throughout. Get ready to embrace your inner beast!
Ghost of Yōtei: Survival Mode Incoming
Sucker Punch is adding “Most Wanted,” a single-player survival mode to Ghost of Yōtei. Players will take on the role of Atsu, progressing through hunts and earning perks for each new run. Jin, Nagato, and Oyuki can also join in. This mode is essentially Naughty Dog’s roguelike mode from The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, offering a fresh challenge for returning players. The update, along with the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition, arrives on October 1st.
Monster Hunter Rise: Ascendance DLC Revealed
Capcom teased the Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance DLC months ago, and now we finally have a look. Hunters find themselves in a new civilization high above the clouds, navigating with their trusty (and definitely not chocobos) mounts. The ecosystems are transforming, though the practical implications remain shrouded in mystery. Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance is slated for release sometime in 2027.
Metro 2039: A Return to the Underground
Following a brief glimpse during Gamescom, 4A Games is back with an extended trailer showcasing a portion of a quest. Metro 2039 arrives on February 1st.
Maneater 2: Bigger and Badder
Maneater”> Get ready to return to the ocean depths in Maneater 2. You’re still a rampaging shark, but this time you can mutate into an even more bizarre and terrifying version of yourself. Maneater 2 is coming in 2027.
Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown
Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown”> Pearl Abyss showcased Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown, an expansion launching on October 15th. It’s more of what you love about Crimson Desert: sailing ships, building homes, and even a little romance. Plus, there’s an ocean and a really big monster lurking beneath the waves.
Final Fantasy Resonance: A Blast from the Past
Square Enix returned with another look at Final Fantasy Resonance, emphasizing its unique HD-2D aesthetic. The trailer also featured an epic battle against Sephiroth, and a demo is available for download right now.
Gundam: Rogue Orbit – A New Era of Mobile Suit Action
While I may not be able to distinguish one Gundam from another, Rogue Orbit looks like a fantastic Armored Core-like action game. Get ready for intense mobile suit battles on March 1st.
Hunter’s Moon: A Witch Hunt for Halloween
The brief, evocative trailer opens with a folk song before switching to a first-person view of someone running through the woods as people mutter ominously. Someone’s hunting witches, and there’s a strong chance that you are the target. Hunter’s Moon arrives on October 1st.
Uncanyon: A Journey Through a Broken World
Uncanyon, from the studio known for its unique brand of storytelling, fits right in. You’re not just finding lost things; you’re putting them back together. In Uncanyon, you rebuild parts of a broken world to solve puzzles and progress through a mysterious forest. It’s beautiful, and it’s coming sometime in 2027.
Lego PlayStation: A Nostalgic Brick-Built Tribute
not that we’re complaining”> Everything’s Lego these days, and Sony is getting in on the action with a Lego PlayStation set. It’s a fun way to celebrate gaming history.
Keeper: A Surrealist Lighthouse Adventure
you should definitely play it”> Freshly independent Double Fine is bringing its surrealist lighthouse game, Keeper, to PS5. You should definitely check it out.
Rev Noir: A New Anime RPG from Konami
Konami’s big anime RPG, Rev Noir, made another appearance, this time with more gameplay. The action in Rev Noir is reminiscent of Bandai’s Tales of series mixed with the intensity of Wuthering Waves. A unique feature allows heroes to absorb monster hearts to augment their abilities in battle. Rev Noir launches in 2027.
Rhapsody in Scarlet: Jazz Age Action-RPG
One of the most surprising reveals was Scarlet Rhapsody, an action-RPG set in a fantasy version of 1920s New York, infused with jazz. The hero rides fantastical creatures (though the connection to jazz is somewhat tenuous) and unleashes spectacular attacks. Rhapsody in Scarlet has no release date yet.
Saros: Overlord Rush Incoming
Housemarque is adding a new game plus mode and a boss rush mode called “Overlord Rush” to Saros, along with approachability updates, including an option to slow the game speed down. The “Zenith” update for Saros is free and will launch later in 2026.
Gran Turismo 7: Spec 4 Update on the Horizon
Gran Turismo 7’s “Spec 4” update will add more cars and course layouts, along with a family-friendly mode designed to make the game more accessible. Polyphony Digital remained tight-lipped about the other features included in this update.
Until Dawn 2: A Reality Show Gone Wrong
Until Dawn 2″> In Until Dawn 2, a group of young adults filming a reality show find themselves in a terrifying situation. Things quickly go wrong, monsters appear, and people start disappearing. The choices you make lead to various forms of misery for the characters you’re controlling, and it sounds like the studio audience plays a role in determining what happens. The trailer ends with someone having their skull ripped apart. Clearly, someone made the wrong choice. Until Dawn 2 arrives on January 1st.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation: A New Chapter Begins
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation”> Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is coming on April 5th. The new trailer showcases a lot of action, including some impressive moves from Cid and Cait Sith (who seems to have forgotten he’s not actually a cat).
