Magic: The Gathering’s Secret Lair has been experimenting with new ways to distribute its highly sought-after print-to-demand products, and the results have largely been positive. The recent Hatsune Miku Commander deck saw the introduction of a 24-hour limited order window, designed to address the frustrating issue of coveted drops selling out almost instantly. Now, Secret Lair boss Matthew Hodgins is confirming that this experiment was a resounding success, paving the way for future releases.

A Successful Experiment
In an official post on the Magic: The Gathering blog”>official post, Hodgins elaborated on the Miku deck’s launch. “It did exactly the job we wanted it to do,” he stated. “If you ordered inside the window, you’re getting a deck. That’s the whole point, and it’s the part I’m happiest about.” This new system aims to ensure that players who are eager to get their hands on unique and desirable decks have a fair chance, regardless of how quickly they can log in or add items to their cart.

The 24-hour limited order window was implemented following negative feedback regarding previous drops like Goblin Storm”>Goblin Storm, which sold out almost immediately. The goal is to create a more equitable system for acquiring these special releases.

While the initial response to the Miku deck’s launch has been overwhelmingly positive, Hodgins acknowledges that there is still room for improvement. Key areas being addressed include queue throttling and optimizing shipping methods in North America.

One of the biggest challenges that remains is backorder fulfillment. While everyone who orders during the limited-time window will eventually receive a deck, the process involves two stages. A limited number of pre-printed sets are available for immediate shipment. Once those sell out, all other purchases go on backorder and will be fulfilled at a later date. This means that players who place backordered purchases may have to wait months to receive their decks.

“That problem will take time to solve, but we agree it should be better, and we’re working on it,” Hodgins stated. This commitment to continuous improvement is a testament to Secret Lair’s dedication to providing the best possible experience for its players.

Furthermore, Hodgins teased the possibility of a dedicated storefront for Secret Lair drops in the future. This would streamline the purchase process and provide greater transparency for customers. The Odds and Ends release will serve as another opportunity to gather data and refine both the 24-hour release format and the design of the potential dedicated storefront.
