Russo Brothers Defend “Improvisation-Based” Approach to ‘Avengers: Doomsday

The Russo brothers, masterminds behind some of the MCU’s biggest hits, are once again pushing boundaries with their upcoming film, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. This time, they’re doing it by embracing a highly unconventional approach: filming without a fully finalized script. While this might sound like chaos to some, the Russos insist it’s all part of their creative process.

Embracing the Unexpected

The decision to film ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ with an evolving script isn’t unprecedented for Marvel, but given the sheer scale and ambition of this project – juggling a massive cast, sky-high expectations, and the highly anticipated return of Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. – it raises some eyebrows. The Russos, however, remain confident in their method.

“We always view the script as a living organism,” Joe Russo explained to the Associated Press. “We’re improvisation-based, rehearsal-based directors. We like to see what the actors bring to the characters, and sometimes you don’t get the actors until a few days or even weeks before you shoot them. And that’s often when the magic happens.”

A Living Script

This approach allows for incredible flexibility and spontaneity, enabling the Russos to react to the actors’ performances and incorporate new ideas as they arise. It also means that even with a release date looming, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is still undergoing refinements.

Further reshoots are currently underway, involving both new and returning cast members ( Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner has teased his involvement ), adding to the already packed production schedule that will soon transition into next year’s ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

The Wait is Almost Over

With just over three months until ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18th, the anticipation is palpable. Will this unconventional approach pay off? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the Russo brothers are committed to delivering an unforgettable cinematic experience.
