Rust’s “Breach and Clear” Wipe: New Mechanics Shake Up the Server

The first Thursday of September has arrived, signaling a pivotal moment for Rust players: force wipe day. This month’s update, titled “Breach and Clear,” introduces significant gameplay changes focused on obstacle destruction and lootable structure demolition. While over a hundred minor updates aim to refine the overall game experience, numerous major alterations are designed to level the playing field for solo players facing overwhelming clan dominance.

Monument Mayhem and Blocked Progress

In the initial days following the wipe, hundreds of players often find themselves “prim-locked,” as established clans rapidly seize control of monuments and hoard essential blueprints. These players then face a frustrating wait for these clans to offer blueprints in their shops, delaying access to crucial Tier 2 workbenches needed for crafting proper weaponry. To mitigate this early-game advantage, Facepunch has implemented monument blockers within red keycard puzzle rooms.

While some of these blockers are vulnerable to melee weapons, others require multiple jackhammer strikes to dismantle. These blockers have a 24-hour lifespan before beginning to decay, offering a temporary obstacle that adds an extra layer of challenge to the initial scramble for resources. This won’t completely halt progression, but it certainly promises a more engaging and unpredictable first day.

Tool Cupboard Upkeep: Size Matters

Another critical change impacts base upkeep costs for Tool Cupboards (TCs). The cost now scales with the number of players authorized to use the TC. Bases with only four players remain exempt from any upkeep tax. However, for every additional player beyond that initial group, the upkeep increases by 2%. This percentage climbs by an additional 4% for each subsequent player. The maximum upkeep tax reaches a substantial 300%. To calculate the upkeep tax, the system considers all players authorized on the TC and code locks, including guest codes. Furthermore, it tracks players who have been deauthorized within the past 24 hours to prevent teams from circumventing the fee by temporarily removing players.

On a brighter note, clan ore farmers can rejoice! The update introduces high-quality metal ore nodes and harvestables that can be broken for HQM ore, potentially easing the burden of upkeep costs. This change provides a valuable resource boost for those specializing in ore farming.

Powering Up the Island

Remember the Power Trip update that went live in August? That’s still relevant! Players must now power up the Power Plant to bring electricity to the entire island. To further emphasize the importance of this feature, electricity is now required for Outpost drones to pick up items from players’ shops. This adds another layer of strategic depth to base design and resource management.

Patch Highlights and New Gear

Beyond the major changes, numerous smaller tweaks and additions are included in this update. Fans can delve into the full patch notes in September’s devblog for a comprehensive overview. Here are a few notable highlights:

  • A new Tier 1 healing item, the Medical Honey Bandage, offers improved healing compared to a standard Bandage but less than a Medical Syringe. It requires honey for crafting.
  • The armor on attack helicopters now detaches as damage is dealt, potentially offering a strategic advantage in aerial combat.
  • Heavy Plate Jacket and Pants now generate noise when the player moves. The Heavy Plate Helmet suppresses noise.
  • Certain pie buffs have been increased, and recipes have been tweaked to enhance their effects.
  • The Large Medkit now removes radiation poisoning, providing a valuable tool for exploring contaminated areas.
