Get ready for a blast from the past! The critically acclaimed Disney Plus animated series, X-Men ’97, is about to inject some serious retro style into the world of Marvel Rivals. While Season 2 may have wrapped up, the mutant mayhem continues with a brand new crossover event.
Retro Style Meets Competitive Gameplay
The Season 9.5 roadmap for Marvel Rivals, unveiled earlier this summer, hinted at mysterious cosmetics arriving on September 4th. Developer NetEase Games kept the details under wraps, building anticipation for what fans could expect. Now, with just hours to go until the release, the secret is out: prepare for Rogue and Gambit to join the fight!
The official Marvel Rivals X account dropped a short video today, revealing that the X-Men ’97 Season 2 crossover will bring two new skins. And who better to represent this iconic era of mutants than everyone’s favorite power couple?
Gambit’s skin is a striking homage to his finale appearance in the show, when he was tragically possessed by Apocalypse. The design masterfully blends elements of the fearsome X-Men villain, like the signature blue face markings, with Gambit’s previous Horseman aesthetic. Meanwhile, Rogue will be rocking her stunning Celestial outfit from the Season 2 finale.
When Can You Suit Up?
As previously announced in the Season 9.5 roadmap, both crossover skins are scheduled for release on September 4th at 2:00 AM UTC. For our US-based players, that translates to 7:00 PM PDT or 10:00 PM EDT on September 3rd. The official announcement doesn’t specify the rarity tier of these new costumes, so keep an eye out when they drop!
Fan Reactions and Future Hopes
The initial fan reaction to the X-Men ’97-themed skins has been… mixed. Gambit’s skin, in particular, is drawing some criticism for its perceived similarity to the previously released Dead Man’s Hand costume. Some players also find Rogue’s skin a bit underwhelming. However, a common sentiment among fans is that neither of these outfits truly captures the best aspects of X-Men ’97 Season 2.
Some fans expressed their preference for alternative looks inspired by New X-Men and X-Factor, or even Storm’s futuristic appearance. Perhaps Season 3 of X-Men ’97 will bring even more exciting skin options when it arrives!
