During the Summer Game Fest, Shift Up unveiled Stellar Blade: Blood Rain, the sequel to their 2024 title, Stellar Blade. This announcement has been one of the most highly anticipated reveals of the non-E3 season thus far, although some online critics have raised concerns about the use of AI in certain elements within the sequel’s debut footage.
Certain users on X platform have highlighted that the Chinese characters displayed throughout the trailer appear to be “visibly AI-generated sloppiness,” and have alleged that some symbols featured in Stellar Blade: Blood Rain’s world are not authentic. One user commented, “Nice AI-assisted trailer, maybe heavily assisted but polished afterwards.”
There has been a significant buzz surrounding the official key art for the upcoming game Stellar Blade Blood Rain, as many believe it incorporates elements of genAI. The peculiar design of the buildings’ windows in the background adds credence to this theory. It is noteworthy that this AI-generated piece of “key art” has been shared on the social media accounts of Stellar Blade director and Shift Up CEO Hyung-tae Kim, who has publicly advocated for the use of AI-generated technology in game development.
While some may view this development as a mere innovation, others approach it with skepticism given Shift Up’s strong endorsement of genAI during their “2026 Economic Growth Strategy” conference in January. At the event, Hyung-tae Kim, the CEO of Shift Up and director of Stellar Blade, expressed optimism about the technology’s potential application in game development, stating that AI tools could enable one person to perform the work of 100 people.
As the gaming community buzzes over the unexpected appearances of generative AI, Kim’s remarks suggest that Stellar Blade: Blood Rain may soon attract heightened scrutiny. Kotaku has reached out to Shift Up for a response, but a PR representative has yet to reply.
