PlayStation has officially announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new performance tier of AI upscaling technology that brings enhanced image quality to the standard PS5 console. Following the launch of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on PS5 Pro, which uses artificial intelligence to upscale game images pixel by pixel with greater detail and stability than conventional methods, Sony acknowledged growing demand from players and developers for similar improvements on base hardware. Until now, the computational demands of PSSR made such an experience impossible on PS5, but today’s announcement marks a significant evolution in PlayStation’s graphics technology.

The new QSSR library is born from Project Amethyst, Sony’s AI graphics collaboration with AMD, representing a quick evolution of PSSR built around two key innovations: a streamlined neural network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation designed to maximize performance on PS5. While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, PlayStation states that QSSR provides notable improvements to both image detail and stability on the standard console, effectively bringing some of the premium experience closer to all players.

The First Titles Adopting QSSR

The first games to utilize this innovative new library are Marvel’s Wolverine by Insomniac Games and Ghost of Yōtei by Sucker Punch Productions. Both titles are being patched today to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5, allowing players to immediately experience the enhanced image quality without requiring any hardware changes.

“Our team at Insomniac works hard to make sure each of our games is a showcase of PlayStation hardware, and we’re excited for Marvel’s Wolverine to be one of the first titles to bring this new QSSR technology to players. QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey. It’s a perfect companion to the launch of Marvel’s Wolverine, and it brings a great taste of the PS5 Pro experience to our players on PS5.”

Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology / Insomniac Games

Fitzgerald emphasized his enthusiasm for the ongoing improvements to the PlayStation platform, noting that he looks forward to more games making use of QSSR in the future. The technology promises to enhance environments with finer detail while maintaining temporal stability—a challenge that has historically been difficult on base PS5 hardware.

“At Sucker Punch, we’re excited to bring QSSR to Ghost of Yōtei players so that they can experience the world we’ve created with even more clarity and detail. QSSR excels at resolving the fine details in our characters and environments and does so with a level of temporal stability that hasn’t been possible on the PS5 console until now. We’ve long wished that all PS5 players could experience the incredible image quality that PSSR brings to PS5 Pro, and QSSR is a positive step towards that goal!”

Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer / Sucker Punch Productions

Patry’s comments highlight how long developers have desired broader access to the image quality benefits previously exclusive to PS5 Pro. The addition of QSSR represents what Sony describes as a positive step toward making premium upscaling available across the entire PlayStation 5 family.

Looking Ahead

PlayStation confirmed that QSSR will be offered broadly to all PlayStation developers, signaling that more titles are expected to adopt the technology in the coming months. The open availability of the library suggests a wider rollout beyond the current two launch titles, potentially transforming image quality standards across numerous upcoming games on base PS5 hardware.

The introduction of QSSR underscores Sony’s commitment to extending the lifespan and capabilities of its existing console install base while maintaining differentiation with the PS5 Pro. As developers continue to refine their use of AI-driven graphics technology, players on standard PS5 can expect progressively enhanced visual experiences without the need for hardware upgrades.
