Overwatch kicked off a new year-long story arc earlier this year, in which Vendetta, a new sword-wielding hero, emerged from the shadows to seize control of Talon, the franchise’s terrorist organization long headed by Doomfist. The whole saga began in February when Vendetta seemingly killed Doomfist and took his place at the top of the organization, a move that left fans feeling strongly about it—much to game director Aaron Keller’s admitted amusement. Eventually, Doomfist was revealed to have survived his fall from the top of Talon’s base, and Blizzard has spent the following months showing him reassembling his old recruits to bring down Vendetta and reclaim his position as the organization’s leader. Yesterday, on October 29, Blizzard released a new cinematic that brought everything it had been building to a full-circle conclusion. The fan reaction has been, well, complicated.

Overwatch‘s latest cinematic, “In the Wolf’s Mouth,” is the culmination of all the audio dramas, web comics, and animated shorts Blizzard has released throughout 2026. It opens with Sojourn, Winston, and Tracer infiltrating Vendetta’s stronghold at Colosseo. By this point, several of her allies have abandoned her world domination scheme, but the Overwatch members must still stop her from setting off an EMP that could level most of Europe.

Sojourn manages to reach Vendetta, but is nearly defeated. Just as her cybernetics begin to spark from all the damage, Doomfist himself—decked out in a new fist courtesy of Doctrine—arrives on the scene and gets a rematch with his usurper.

On this occasion he emerges victorious, declaring that he now sees the world afresh. He had grown complacent for as long as he has existed, yet now claims to have “evolved.” Evolution through conflict has ostensibly defined the character since his debut in 2017, though in practice that has rarely held true. He has indeed begun scheming and setting events in motion, but many of them have simply led nowhere, since Overwatch—having taken so long to build any real momentum into its narrative—has followed through on almost nothing he has done. While some of his stagnation as a villain can be laid at the feet of Overwatch‘s equally stagnant story, the truth is that Doomfist has done little of substance over the past decade. The short film ends with Sojourn reluctantly allowing Doomfist to escape alongside his loyal crew, while Talon’s leader abandons Vendetta to Overwatch to take into custody, swearing that Talon will return “as something new” in the future.

But now that Vendetta has been defeated, it seems that despite all Doomfist’s talk of “something new” to come, the end result of Overwatch‘s story is that we are, in a sense, back to square one. Doomfist holds power, Overwatch sits on thin ice with the United Nations as an officially unofficial peacekeeping body, and Vendetta’s coup appears to have amounted to nothing more than a temporary disturbance of the status quo.

“Spends a year hyping up a villain and telling you how strong and powerful she’s become, doesn’t actually matter and all her upgrades are deleted in the span of a few seconds and she gets a humiliating ass kicking without landing a single blow,” one fan writes on Reddit. “Masterful storytelling and stakes, Overwatch.”

“Really feels like Blizzard failed her character,” another replies. “I get that she was going to lose, but holy fuck what an universal and humiliating ass blasting that completely undermines and ruins her character.”

Even Fareeha Andersen, the voice of the hero Sojourn who joined the game’s roster earlier this year, voiced similar criticism after the cinematic went live.

I think… this current ow story arc doesn’t hit for me because it lacks meaning. When the setting remains unchanged after the story’s been told, that can be fine if the characters themselves have changed! But we need to see them experience emotion beyond just anger and more anger

Ironically enough, while some took issue with Doomfist’s apparent demise back in February, now fans are debating whether or not his opp was given her own due respect. When she first debuted, she was a surprising pull from old Overwatch lore as the daughter of a man killed by Reaper in the 2018 PvE event Overwatch Retribution, whose death acted as the catalyst for the internal strife within Overwatch that eventually led to the organization’s demise. For a story that has spent the past decade in limbo, plucking someone long unseen from all of those previous failed starts was actually a pretty cool way for Blizzard to get the narrative back on track.

Vendetta made some pretty ballsy moves. She finally took the fight to Watchpoint: Gibraltar and ran Overwatch out of their base, and she created alliances across several disparate elements of Blizzard’s universe, managing to make it feel like a coherent world. And though she was always destined to fail in the end, she had more motion in the tip of her sword than Doomfist had in that entire giant mechanical fist of his.

And yet you’ll find some fans claiming she fell from the throne just as quickly as she took it. On that point, I disagree. Blizzard, through every other lore drop it’s released this year, has been showing Vendetta making moves and also losing ground as Overwatch has faced her in various stages around the world. Though she was analytical and strategic at times, Vendetta has been largely defined by her rage at Talon for denying her what she believed to be her birthright: a seat at the organization’s table following the death of her father. It’s why many of her collaborators pulled out from her plans. Domina, one of her earliest allies in this whole narrative arc, said outright that her plans were “too dramatic for [her company’s] shareholders.”

Part of the reason that I think some might argue that Overwatch‘s narrative this year was rushed is that large parts of the character-focused connective tissue were sequestered somewhere other than in the game itself. The Webtoon comic Overwatch Undivided focuses on a lot of the smaller moments between the Overwatch team, and it does help the story feel less like a series of dramatic bullet points and more like a more proper narrative, but you have to seek it out on an app. The highs and lows of Overwatch‘s narrative were quite literally divided between two different platforms, and if Blizzard is taking feedback on how to handle whatever story it has going on next year, I’d say that finding a way to make all sides of the story more readily available and apparent would make it more likely to pull in players.

I’m willing to withhold my judgment on how this all wraps up considering the in-game Overwatch story menu still has four more lore drops left before this season ends in a month, but whatever Blizzard has in store is going to have to deliver on its own promises of meaningful development, lest it never beat the “this was all pointless” allegations. For now, some fans do seem pretty stoked about a revitalized Doomfist who might actually become a real threat once more.
