Blizzard Entertainment unveiled a new “Defiled Anthem” event for Overwatch earlier this week, featuring premium cosmetics that will be available exclusively in China and sparking immediate backlash from the international player base. The trailer showcased skins and cosmetic additions for Shion, D.Mon, Kiriko, Reaper, and Emre, headlined by a transforming “Evolution” skin whose sound and visual effects evolve throughout each match. Because the content has not been announced for release outside of China, players worldwide have voiced frustration over what they perceive as preferential treatment of one region.

The centerpiece of the event is the Shion “Evolution” skin, a dynamic cosmetic that shifts its audio-visual presentation as matches progress—a feature fans say represents some of the most polished content in the game’s history. But the very quality of these cosmetics has intensified criticism, with players pointing out that China-exclusive releases have repeatedly offered what many consider to be the best skins, emotes, and highlight intros available.

A Pattern of Regional Exclusivity

The backlash is not isolated to a single release. Blizzard has previously drawn similar ire over region-locked content, including a Naraka: Bladepoint crossover as well as exclusive skins for Pharah and Mercy that never reached international players. The recurring nature of these events has led many in the community to question why the studio consistently debuts its most ambitious cosmetics in one market while holding them back from everyone else.

'Horrible day to be a Shion main'

Player sentiment, as you can imagine, has been negative. Take a look at any Overwatch-focused subreddit or social media account and you’ll see the same complaints cropping up. But why does this happen? Why does Blizzard put out these skins in one region when it knows fans in another are going to complain?

“I think NetEase has the responsibility of publishing our game in China, and part of their approach is to do things that are specific to that market. And the approach that we want to take is to make sure that our game makes players feel cared for, no matter the market. And I think we fell short of the mark with this current event, but it does mean that as we look forward to future events and activations, we have a very specific view that ‘Is this just the right way to run the event?’ and from the perspective of holistically, ‘How do things balance out?'”
