Infinity Ward is set to ship Modern Warfare 4 later this month, bringing with it a fully realized reimagining of DMZ that could cement the Call of Duty franchise’s place among the greatest extraction shooters ever made. Originally debuting as a comparatively casual Escape From Tarkov-inspired beta inside 2022’s Modern Warfare 2, the mode has been rebuilt over four years into something far more ambitious, and early looks suggest it may finally deliver on the promise that first teased players back in the DMZ Beta.

The new DMZ arrives bundled with Modern Warfare 4’s launch, offering a mode now vastly larger than its predecessor — packed with countless new features and years of polish. While journalists have yet to fully play it, briefings and official previews indicate that Infinity Ward has rethought nearly every pillar of the extraction experience, from narrative structure to enemy design.

A genre at a crossroads

The timing of DMZ’s return arrives as the extraction shooter landscape has shifted dramatically since its heyday. At the start of this year, the subgenre was having a moment: titles were peaking in popularity and anticipation built for upcoming releases such as Marathon. Now the picture looks quite different. Arc Raiders’ recent Frozen Trail update arrives this week just as the game has shed much of its player base, Escape From Tarkov is redirecting focus toward its PvE update, and Marathon’s reception has been far less triumphant than hoped.

In that vacuum, DMZ could emerge as a defining entry in a genre hungry for innovation. Where many extraction shooters reduce objectives to glorified fetch quests, Infinity Ward appears determined to raise the bar through richer narrative integration and more dynamic encounters.

A story-driven exclusion zone

The most compelling change on paper is how DMZ handles quests and storytelling within its map of Hajin. According to an official Call of Duty blog post, new DMZ Orders will “introduce Hajin’s [the name of the map in DMZ] core gameplay systems, teaching you the ropes, speaking to the narrative, directing you toward different activities across the exclusion zone, and rewarding you for completing specific objectives.”

This approach elevates objectives beyond the standard template. In a virtual briefing earlier this year, Polygon was shown an operation that involved descending into a bank vault to rescue a VIP before escorting them safely out of the zone — a far cry from the simple retrieval tasks common elsewhere.

“Lieutenants offer a high-risk way to earn DMZ XP, DMZ cash, and valuable loot,” while commanders “present fierce resistance as they are seemingly impervious against many standard weapons, and may require tactical knowledge to bring down.”

The mode is also home to high-ranking bosses known as lieutenants and commanders. These formidable foes make the world feel alive, though they differ sharply in difficulty. Commanders appear resistant to standard weapons and may demand coordinated team effort to defeat — a design choice that echoes Arc Raiders’ most memorable threats, which grew negligible once players accumulated powerful gear.

The gunplay advantage

Beyond systems and storytelling, Modern Warfare 4 carries an inherent edge: its engine. The Call of Duty series has long been lauded for delivering some of the smoothest, cleanest first-person shooter gunplay in the industry. Pairing that refined feel with a tense, high-stakes extraction loop should prove difficult to match — especially as competitors grapple with declining engagement.

Additional mechanics further distinguish DMZ from its rivals. The Forward Operating Base serves as players’ command center, complete with utility stations including a bounty leaderboard where you can track top PvP performers and claim rewards for eliminating them. A similar boss board lets players purchase intel on lieutenants and commanders before heading into the zone.

Looking ahead

After two years of Black Ops titles, Modern Warfare 4 marks a refreshing return to form — with single-player mode sounding promising and multiplayer offering a familiar foundation. But it is DMZ that holds the greatest excitement, carrying real potential to become one of the best extraction shooters ever made.
