Microsoft recently unveiled a blog post that lists an impressive 15 compelling reasons to migrate to the new Outlook experience. The company is further sweetening the deal with an upcoming feature that could tip the scales for even more users.
Outlook already lets users sort by a range of fields—such as sender, category, importance, subject, and message size—via the Filter menu in both the Windows desktop client and the web version.
Under the new change, whenever a user sorts by a field other than From, Subject, or Date Received, Outlook will automatically reveal an extra column that displays the exact value used for sorting. For instance, if the list is sorted by Size, a Size column will appear, allowing users to see at a glance the metric driving the order. Microsoft expects this enhancement to simplify sorting behavior and reduce the need for manual view adjustments or individual message inspections.
Listed under Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 564803, the enhancement is slated for general availability later this month—June 2026. While Microsoft cautions that roadmap dates can shift, the rollout is expected to reach both desktop and Outlook for Web users, ensuring a consistent experience across platforms.
Outlook for Web will also receive this update, allowing web‑based users to enjoy the same streamlined sorting functionality as their desktop counterparts.
