Cold Symmetry has unleashed a monumental update for Mortal Shell 2, addressing many of the criticisms leveled against the game since its release. Available now on Steam, with PlayStation and Xbox versions soon to follow, this patch is more than just a bug fix; it’s a comprehensive overhaul designed to enhance every facet of the Soulslike experience.

A Generous New Economy

One of the most significant changes revolves around the game’s economy. Previously criticized for its stinginess, Mortal Shell 2 now offers a more generous distribution of currencies, allowing players greater freedom to experiment with different Shells (the game’s class system) and weaponry. The update introduces new Tarstones, similar to rings in other Soulslike games, providing passive and active bonuses. New Fragile Tarstones yield Tarcores, which can be used to upgrade existing Tarstones when they break after repeated use. Furthermore, new Glimpse Stones now break into Glimpses after defeating a certain number of enemies.

Previously, Glimpses were an incredibly rare resource, essential for increasing your bond with Shells. This limitation prevented players from fully exploring all available Shells in a single playthrough. With this update, Glimpses and Tarstones are no longer finite, empowering players to upgrade every Shell and Tarstone without restriction. To further facilitate experimentation, the patch introduces Mether’s Severance, an item that allows you to sever your bond with a Shell, refunding all previously spent Glimpses.

To encourage broader experimentation with Tarstones, each upgrade now yields more Tarcores. Players who have already tempered some Tarstones will find additional Tarcores in their inventory to bridge any gaps. This ensures that everyone can benefit from the enhanced resource availability.

Rebalanced Arsenal and Bosses

Beyond the economic overhaul, the patch rebalances the entire game’s arsenal of weapons and all Shells. Several major bosses have also been updated, with previously missing moves now integrated into their attack patterns. This ensures a more challenging and varied experience for players tackling the game’s toughest encounters.

Enhanced Exploration and Accessibility

The world of Mortal Shell 2 is rich in secrets and discoveries, but the original distribution of Beacons (bonfires) was uneven, with some areas offering an abundance while others felt sparse. This patch addresses this issue by adding new Beacons across Fainweald and Mammon, providing more frequent save points and resting locations. Egon’s Stone further enhances accessibility within dungeons by allowing players to return to the dungeon entrance upon death, rather than being sent to the nearest Beacon. This prevents Gloom (souls) loss for that specific death, offering a safety net for challenging encounters.

Gameplay Tweaks: Ri पोस्ट Overhaul

The patch includes an extensive list of gameplay tweaks, but perhaps the most notable is the overhaul of ripostes. After parrying an enemy enough times, players can perform a riposte – a high-damage attack with unique animations. Previously, the damage from ripostes didn’t scale with enemy health in the late-game or during NG+ and Night Mode. Now, players should experience a significant increase in riposte damage, along with wider and more consistent Invulnerability windows when performing them.

While the Steam patch notes are extensive and worth exploring to see how your specific Shell, playstyle, or weapon has been affected, it’s clear that Cold Symmetry is committed to refining and improving Mortal Shell 2. Despite its initial flaws, the game was a compelling Soulslike action hybrid, and this update solidifies its position as a title worthy of discussion alongside the genre’s greats. Available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
