We spoke with writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson to uncover the secrets behind this bold new direction, exploring how Peter Parker transforms into something truly monstrous.

The “Midnight Universe” is Marvel’s latest attempt to recapture the magic of alternate realities, following in the footsteps of the Ultimate Universe and DC’s Absolute Universe. But this time, the focus is on infusing classic characters with elements of horror.
“On that initial meeting with the three writers, senior editorial, and Marvel President Dan Buckley, the quote from Dan I remember most clearly was ‘horror in the front seat, superhero very much in the back,'” Johnson tells IGN. “I took that as permission to go as hard as we want to go. I’m approaching it like a creator-owned horror series, honoring the core of the Spider-Man story but retold as a prestige horror title.”
One of the most striking changes is the radioactive spider itself. This isn’t just a simple bite; it’s a slow, agonizing transformation that physically alters Peter Parker in horrifying ways.
“I need to be careful not to spoil what the iconic spider is, and what it’s doing to Peter… it’s a mystery we’ll slowly reveal over the course of the series,” Johnson teases. “But I can say the body horror escalation from issue to issue is extreme.”
The creative team draws inspiration from various sources, including films by David Cronenberg, John Carpenter, and Guillermo Del Toro, as well as horror manga like Junji Ito and Homunculus. ScieTronc’s art style heavily influences Johnson’s writing.
“ScieTronc’s art has probably been the biggest influence on my writing for Midnight Spider-Man,” Johnson explains. “The manga influence on ScieTronc’s work is obvious at a glance: it has all the facial expressiveness and dynamic action that manga does so well, but there’s also a super high level of detail, rendering, environmental interest, and creative layout that the best Western comics have.”
Midnight Spider-Man isn’t just about horror; it’s also about power and responsibility in a world where those concepts seem increasingly irrelevant.
“The mission statement of Spider-Man has always been ‘With Great Power there must also come great responsibility,'” Johnson says. “But writing Spider-Man in 2026—MIDNIGHT Spider-Man in particular—we have to acknowledge that the world we live in has almost completely refuted that premise. A much truer statement in 2026 would be: POWER MAKES MONSTERS.”
