Universal Pictures has released first-look images of its upcoming reboot

, featuring Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs and Austin Butler as James “Sonny” Crockett.
The film, which director Joseph Kosinski — the mind behind Top Gun: Maverick — has been developing since last year, offered fans two photos of its stars on Monday ahead of a 2028 release. The images depict Jordan and Butler in character as their slick title leads, guns in hand.

Both shots were shared across social media to mark the start of production, indicating that significant work remains before the film’s premiere in coming years.
The reboot will explore “the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami.” Its story is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.”

Despite being nearly two years away from release, this latest attempt at a Miami Vice film has assembled a substantial cast. John Leguizamo, known for The Odyssey and the original Miami Vice series, was reportedly cast as the new movie’s main villain in September. Walton Goggins, of Fallout and The White Lotus, was reportedly added as a second villain just weeks ago.

Miami Vice ’85 is scheduled to premiere May 19, 2028. It is produced by Kosinski and Dylan Clark (The Batman), with Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer attached as writers.
For context on the franchise, IGN previously gave the 2006 film starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx an 8/10 review at its release, stating: “for those seeking an intense, seductive and gritty crime drama, Miami Vice delivers the goods.”
